Campus Safety

We are trying to identify specific universities that have a CAMPUS SAFETY program in place.

Don’t they all?

They all do.

Larger ones will have their own police force. Several places we visited would indicate several departments would respond – campus, town, county and state. Plus lots of blue light poles.

I just googled “campus safety program” ,thinking it was the name of a particular program, but came up empty.

Every school in this nation has a set of protocols in place for crisis management. They all practice fire drills, those in the midwest do tornado drills, and everyone does lockdown drills.

Every campus I’ve been to has mentioned campus safety in the tour, highlighting the blue light poles and the campus security office.

Though often some of the riskier college environments for first semester frosh are parties with free flowing alcohol. The risk of problems like fights/assaults and problematic instances of sex up to and including predatory rape is heightened in such environments.

Right… but I’m not sure what sort of campus program could prevent that, beyond a zero tolerance booze/drug rule.

^ Not that that even works when they try it – Penn State has a “dry campus.” And yet they’re not exactly known for the lack of drinking, including in the dorms.

^^ Hubs went to a no-tolerance Christian school in a no-tolerance dry county and the booze still flowed at parties and in the dorms just under the noses of those in charge.

I used to work at a college. We had active shooter training for all employees. We implemented emergency alert notification systems. We had the blue poles with emergency buttons around campus. We had regular fire and tornado drills. In addition to our campus police office, we had a “safety officer” designated for each building/area in case of an emergency. We complied with the Clery Act. If I was working late and didn’t feel safe walking to my car, I could call the campus police to escort me. We had campus police coverage 24/7.

I often read complaints on CC about the cost of higher education. Campus safety is part of that cost.

Risk mitigation would have to be on the part of the student to avoid such situations, or, if in such situations, avoid getting drunk or drugged into becoming more vulnerable to being victimized by a criminal, or getting into situations they regret later. Many first semester frosh are unaware of the risks, so they become easy victims in these situations. But how many parents or colleges tell students this type of stuff before they start college?

I recall my S (graduated from college in 2016) was required to do an online tutorial the summer before he arrived at his college on safety issues regarding alcohol, drugs, and sex.

OP, please define what you mean by a “campus safety program”?

I think this is a fishy post. First post. All caps CAMPUS SAFETY. “We” are trying to identify…

Fishy. If I didn’t know better I say “bot”.

@ucbalumnus My high school actually runs a series of workshops for our seniors on topics including their legal rights when confronted by a cop, the dNgers of situations like the one you describe, credit and a few other topics. I wish my kids school did.
