Campus Security

Is there agregated statistics within 2 miles (or some small radius) of crime from campuses? That would be interesting to see. (Compare schools instead of going to look up crime in area school by school. )
Interestingly Rochester is not on any list mentioned in linked article. Neither is Rhodes. But my email is full of alerts about car robberies within a mile from Rhodes campus (with instructions not to resist.) On the other hand, I hear about not much crime directly on campus. From link above, I feel no college is safe. I was so surprised to see Wooster on the list. We had a feeling that it is in cornfield after visit…

The list also shows Stanford as the 8th most dangerous campus!

Our tours of schools located within big cities always had a focus on safety (blue phones, getting security escorts back to housing late at night, etc). Is there anything like this in place at these smaller campuses? (We didn’t tour any of this type). Of course there’s always the question of where campus security stops and city policing begins.

I think all of my kids’ schools had blue lights and escorts, they never used them. Campus security was on campus only, they had zero jurisdiction for the city (a fact some parents had a hard time with).

I think most campuses have escorts and blue light systems.

Highly recommend visiting a campus and walking around the area before committing. If there’s any question, I would walk again at different times of day and try to speak to students about their experiences. We took off two colleges from my daughter’s list because she didn’t feel safe in the area around the school.

I know that Northeastern and Boston University campus police have authority in neighborhoods bordering their campuses and beyond. But they are fully deputized police departments, not private security guards.

That’s good to know (have a BU student). I believe at Rutgers and UDel, they are completely separate, and there have been incidents where campus security had to stop pursuing potential criminals. The vast majority of crime is off campus (UDel lost a freshman this fall due to a motorcycle speeding and hitting a pedestrian right next to campus) and parents want campus security to assist in the city, it that’s not possible.

Rutgers has a fully operational police department at all three campuses. They work with local and county law enforcement and I believe they are comparable to any other police department.

I agree. But there are some “solutions” to it too. For example, my DD likes Rhodes in Memphis and it is “safe” on campus (loosely gated community) and very unsafe directly outside. Our solution was not intuitive. Dd brought a car that is on campus. She never goes outside to immediate vicinity of campus without escort of several 6 ft guys :). She drives for shopping 20 minutes to very safe Germantown to Costco, Trader Joe’s etc. She works in Germantown too. She lives on campus. I am not sure what we are going to do for senior year since I am not comfortable for her living off campus.
She does not usually go to downtown Memphis at all. BTW, she is off campus a lot.

Absolutely, you have to do what’s best for you and your student.
