Can a college cancel my courses for the fall semester?

My college’s financial aid representative threatened that the school would be cancelling my courses for the fall if I did not pay my balance due by Monday December 1st. I find this hard to believe because I took it upon myself to contact them when I found out my balance wasn’t covered (this past monday), and was never contacted by them about the matter. I searched the student accounts web site and saw nothing that stated this and I even called back on Wednesday and was told contradicting things by people in the financial aid office (said my classes would be cancelled by student accounts) and the student accounts office (the rep said that isn’t the case, but she sounded like a student so I don’t know how relaible this person is). I’m obviously not going to cheat them of the money and have been applying for loands since I talked to them on Monday, but because of the holiday will not hear anything until next week. Can the really cancel my courses even though I was never warned about such practices and never received a bill for my tuition, etc?

John, read through the school’s undergraduate bulletin or handbook (called different names at different institutions). It is normally accessible online, through a link off the schools “current student” pages.

It’s normally a large word document or pdf file. It is the operative document for all policies… financial, admission, degree curriculum and requirements, health and safety, disciplinary procedures. The info you seek should be in there somewhere. You may well get conflicting answers from various staff, but this is the book of written policy. It helps to know your rights, potential penalties, ramifications going into this.

Good luck to you.
