Can a college take back a scholarship after you've already been awarded it?

So I e-mailed my college im gonna go to about when I could get my scholarship that they offered me and they replied with “we did not have any ___ scholarships to give this year” i feel like this is unfair bc they i already got awarded it. can they do this?

No college will give YOU the scholarship. It will be deducted from your tuition bill. I can assume that this was not a merit scholarship.

Scholarships are generally awarded with certain conditions. Did you get a clearly written letter which outlined the terms of the scholarship, such as how large the scholarship would be, the time by which you had to agree to it and put down a deposit, minimum GPA to maintain the scholarship after the first year, and so on?

As @TomSrOfBoston said, at least in my experience the scholarships have been deducted from the tuition bill that they send us.

Are you a freshman? Was this grant in the official financial aid package they sent you? If so, you should explain to a financial aid officer that it was in your package and ask why it’s been removed.

Colleges get to determine how they split up any institutional aid they offer, so if you qualified for a grant they no longer give then there’s not much you can do. If the school is unaffordable without it, you may want to take a gap year to preserve your freshman status and apply to more affordable colleges.

was NOT a merit scholarship the only condition was to say “yes, i accept it” if you wanted it.

We need more details if you want us to help you. Was it a need based scholarship? Those are sometimes available only until they run out of money.

@DadTwoGirls asks an important question. Were the details of the offer spelled out in an official award letter? If so, did you meet them?

Did you receive an award notice? Did you check if you have any document/review pending? Since this is a need-based scholarship (grant), your need may be subject to verification by providing further document even if you have received an official award notice. How did they notify you the scholarship offered? Was there a deadline for accepting it?
