Hi everyone, this is my first time on the college confidential boards and I was seriously curious as to my chances at several schools, will chance back. I will be the first in my family to graduate from high school, come june.

Your applying to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a 380 in SAT MATH?!?!?!

Or are you talking about a different MIT?

It’s hard to chance you for the other schools b/c I don’t know much about them and i hate to say it but that 380 sticks out like a sore thumb :(

I know my 380 sticks out but I taught maybe my double 800 would cover it up, for isn’t a 1980 a respectable score? I decided to apply to MIT on a whim, knowing they view applicants in a holistic fashion- I was hoping my diversity would be pivotal, plus I plan to major in the humanities.

Congratulations on the 2 800’s! However, a 380 in math is VASTLY below average, so it would be hard to see you getting into a school like MIT where many applicants, even if they don’t have full 800’s, are still edging toward a much higher, constant average. MIT is quite math oriented, and a 380 really shows a lack of math skills. :/

I understand that, and know that it is a definite reach. What about my chances at the other 9 schools? I know my 2 800’s will surely skew my average more towards the middle at the rest of the schools.

:/, no one has yet to chance me for more than just MIT. I know it is a reach and thus expect a rejection but I am very weary of my chances at the florida schools- UCF,UF,and FIU. Plus the other schools, such as Tulane and Brandeis- my top two beyond MIT

I had two 800s in the same sections, but I expected them to cover a 700 in math, not a 380. MIT requires all students to take heavy math and science courses. Single and multivariable calc, physics, chemistry. If you can only get a 380 in math, it’s nigh impossible that you can pass those classes and it would thus be irresponsible for MIT to accept you. You also seem to be missing your science and math SAT Subject Tests, which MIT requires. If you haven’t taken those, you need to in January, which means you don’t have a chance to raise your SAT Reasoning math score, which you desperately need to do to have a chance almost anywhere

That 380 is going to bring down your chances everywhere. Hugely. I just looked at many of your other schools on The College Board’s website, and as I expected, 380 is well below their 25-75% range of SAT math scores. Even if you haven’t taken the Subject Tests required for MIT, your best bet is to forget about that application and retake the SAT in January to raise that math section score.

You shouldn’t feel bad. 1980, disregarding your section scores, is a respectable score, despite the distorted views many on CC have. And 800s on two sections is very impressive. But 380 is very, very much below the level of almost any selective institution.

You seem like an awfully nice guy and I’d like to give you a better response, to tell you if you were in or out or at least say which colleges I thought were match, reach, or safety, but I have never seen scores like that. I think many people here are having the same problem.

The double 800 is incredible, especially since CR and W are the two parts of the SAT that I wouldn’t dream of getting an 800 on. Unfortunately, I could never imagine getting a 380 on the Math section either (Call me nerdy, but I enjoy the SAT Math section).

The only thing that could have softened the blow of a 380 Math score was if there was some sort of explaination for it. However, I honestly can’t think of any possible excuse for that. Foreigners have an excuse for low CR / W scores because they’re not familiar with the English language. Numbers are an international language. You really should retake the SAT in January or February to raise that 380 to at least a 500. Enlist in the help of some review books (which can be found at your local library if you don’t want to buy them) and a math teacher. 1980 is respectable, but a 380 in Math will definitely hinder your college admissions. You’re clearly not ‘dumb’ and you deserve to get into a good college.

BTW, even if, by some crapshoot-type miracle, you get into MIT, you wouldn’t be a happy camper there. You really don’t seem like a math loving person and MIT is filled with math/science nerds. Yeah, I’ve heard the whole spiel about them looking for more creative people and diversity, but they want creative, diverse people with high math SAT scores! Your double 800’s and your farmer background aren’t going to save you there.

That is, by far, the largest, most unbelievable discrepancy between verbal and math scores I’ve ever witnessed. Even some internationals, some of whom have (and I’ve seen this) perfect math scores and low-600/upper-500 verbal scores, don’t have as imbalanced SAT scores as this.

And the fact that you’re apparently applying to MIT (as your first choice, no less) just makes me believe you’re a ■■■■■ even more. Anyone with a decent head on their shoulders would know that, with a 380 math score, they have no chance whatsoever at MIT.

A 380 is more than 100 points below the national average; MIT usually accepts those with superior math skills.

Well, assuming you are for real, I wonder if you only took the SAT once. Because if you did, I wonder also if you got off a space on the answer key or something during the math section. It is rather unbelievable. No one can chance you because it is such a bizarre set of statistics. Take the SAT again. Most schools superscore, I think.
