can a good SAT score make up for a mot so good GPA?

Hi, Im want to go to NYU, and i have a SAT score that is above NYU’s average and a GPA that is a little below average? Do you think that that will balance out?

I got in with a 2070 and a 3.06, so I’d say yes. My counselor and my teacher both gave great recommendations, though, both of which emphasized “my potential,” and that I’m one of those slacks-off-if-unchallenged-and-has-kind-of-“tolerated”-high-school-but-will-excel-at-NYU kinds of kids. Plus, I think my essays were good.

A lower-than-average GPA isn’t going to kill your chances, but it might help if your recs address it and try to put a positive spin on it like my counselor and teacher did. And, of course, it’ll help if the rest of your application (ECs, essays, etc.,) is really good.
