Can a kid from CAS (or any other NYU school) minor in drama at Tisch?

I think the answer is “no,” but I cannot find the answer on the TSOA Depart of Drama website, so if anyone knows, please let me know. (I am trying to get the info for a colleague.)

I think I remember Robert Cameron being asked this at the accepted students’ event in April, during which someone asked what would happen if she decided she did not want to major in acting, but wanted to transfer to the CAS and then minor in acting/drama. I think I recall Cameron saying that no, one cannot minor in acting, as it is a very rigorous, time consuming program that progresses through the years. But I could be wrong.

NMR, no, a drama minor is not available at Tisch. The only drama classes a non-major can take are the Open Arts curriculum courses, but that would not constitute a minor.

That’s what I thought, but the person to whom I am speaking insisted that they were told that kids could take courses at Tisch and perhaps a drama minor. I distinctly remember Mr. Cameron saying that there wasn’t any way to do it, as the curriculum is intense and progressive. Are the Open Arts curriculum courses through TSOA?

I concur with AlwaysAMom…CAS kids can take drama classes in the Open Arts curriculum courses available through TSOA (those are not courses within the studios but are under TSOA). These would not make a minor but simply that some courses are available to take by non-Tisch students (again, NOT in the studios).

Your friend is correct that they can take courses in TSOA (only in the Open Arts Curriculum)… but is incorrect in that a CAS student cannot do a minor and also cannot partake in the studio classes.

To clarify further, many classes at Tisch are restricted to Tisch majors (including the studio classes).

Some classes within the Tisch School are open to students in other schools at NYU and these classes fit under the Open Arts curriculum/directory. These do not constitute a minor, however. But they have some courses in acting for non-majors.

However, there is a STUDIO that I believe is for one semester only that students from other universities can apply to and students from other schools within NYU can apply to called Acting for Stage and Screen, the Open Arts Studio at Tisch and it is competitive to get into and requires several things including an audition tape. Again, it is not a minor but just a semester offering and it is separate training from the studios that the BFA students are in. It is a special one semester program, I believe.

Thanks, soozie. I will send that info on to my colleague.

Yep, the Open Arts classes count as elective credits.

It would be impossible to minor in drama because you have to be in studio 3 days a week 9-6, and there’s no way to pop in and out of that - it’s all or nothing!

Thanks, Jenny. That is what I remember Mr. Cameron saying.

However, it’s possible to minor/doublemajor in another subject outside Tisch, say if I would be a MT major at CAP, correct?

To Arianna,

Yes, that is possible.

sorry to butt in… don’t really know how to post correctly. my son has been accepted to the NYU steinhardt school in fine arts. he’s always had a lot of interests and his passion at the moment is music (which he feels he can do out side of school) as well as drama. he’s kind of regretting that he’s chose to major in fine arts and we’re wondering if nyu would let him switch to an undecided general BA the first year… then he might try and audition and get into tisch in the fall (as i presume there’s no way to get in this year)… any thoughts. he’s still deciding between nyu, risd, and usc.

Beryl, I don’t know how that would be possible. Students in CAS can often be designated as undecided but I’ve never heard of it for Steinhardt. This is a question you should ask directly of NYU. I don’t know that they’d allow him to switch to CAS at this point. He could, however, stay in Steinhardt for the year then try for an internal transfer to Tisch for the following year, though. He’d likely have to begin as a freshman in studio, if he were to be accepted.
