My son’s grades have crashed senior year. We’d like to not report them before end of the semester. By then, of course, too late to choose. What we’re afraid of is rejection once they see his grades. Most top UCs (Berkeley, UCLA) say he needs an unweighted C average, no Ds or Fs. Some UCs (Irvine, not sure who else), says weighted C average (where AP and IB classes—if you get a C, like a regular B, etc).

We don’t mind losing money on the choice we don’t take.

What happens if you choose 2? You get none?

You cannot submit a SIR to more than ONE UC campus.
The following is the worst course of action you could choose:
You should immediately contact all campuses you are still considering and tell them what his grades are right now, what steps he is taking to improve those grades (tutoring, community college summer class, etc…), what final grade he reasonably expects, and if he will be rescinded if the grade remains where it is. It would be far better to find out now while other options are still available than after May 1st when there will be no alternatives.

Campuses are generally more willing to be flexible if you have “kept them in the loop” than if you attempt to hide sub-standard grades. Final transcripts, including notation of high school graduation, are required before admission is confirmed, so the grades will eventually be reported - and by then it will be too late.
