Can a teacher take back my letter of recommendation?

A teacher recently threatened to call my university of choice in order to rescind the letter he wrote for me. I was in good relation with this teacher prior, so I thought it was a good idea to let him write me a letter. Unfortunately, he has dissolved into a jerk and a hypocrite and issued the threat to me recently.

I’m worried that the college will take back my admission and seeing as the admission deadline is May 1st, I won’t be able to attend another university, which means I am practically screwed. I don’t see any way of resolving things with this teacher, especially if he’s already called them. Is he allowed to do this?

I have nothing but As and Bs in my other classes and I have several APs, none of which are his class. So, even if he takes it back and fails me (though I shouldn’t), will it matter to the college? I heard they might at least send me a letter to explain.

(Quite the shame. This teacher’s class has become a joke. We’ve covered less than half of the curriculum we were supposed to this year. He has received quite the promotion recently, guess he let all that get to his head)

Tell him to pound sand. The college isn’t going to listen to a rant like that.

I agree that’s quite silly of him to be honest.

How do you know he actually followed through with his threat? If I were you, I would go see your GC and discuss this. Do NOT be critical of the teacher or go into what your conflict is (you will not be able to avoid sounding whiny and entitled, believe me). I guess I would want the GC to discuss with the teacher, and possibly call the college before May 1 if the teacher did call them to assess the impact. I would do this on Monday morning, and ask the GC to please follow up so you could still deposit elsewhere by May 1 if necessary.

I’m not sure if he did, but I’m really hoping he didn’t.

Although it’s likely any move by the teacher would have no impact in this case (we really don’t know what’s going on - we only have OP’s word and that’s not from an unbiased viewpoint), I can think of cases where a teacher doing this could result in at least further investigation by the college. Students caught cheating, plagiarizing, stealing tests, extreme bullying, or physical assaults would all be legitimate grounds for a teacher to report them to a college and for the college to then rescind. Not saying that is the case here, just that there are reasonable cases where it could occur, so don’t automatically assume that any student would be in the clear.

Go to your guidance counselor tomorrow and talk with him or her. Follow intparent’s advice and do not go into the relationship between you and your teacher.
At this point, if your grade is a D or F in the class, you could face your admission being rescinded once the final reports are sent out. However, if you have a C in the class and it’s your only C of this semester, the school is probably not going to do anything even if your teacher calls.

Yikes, that’s not good. However, you’ve already gotten in, and I don’t think an angry teacher will make much of an impact anymore. I’m not sure what’s going on, though–did you have a petty argument with him? cheat? lie about something? I’d have a brief chat with your counselor just in case, but unless you really screwed up, you should be okay. Just make sure you can pull a satisfactory grade in his class after all’s said and done.

Good luck!

Nah, I wouldn’t do anything like that. The other students never liked me much. I got by for the first 3 quarters with As by just minding my own business. Didn’t work this quarter and he sided with them. According to my school’s grading system, I should at the minimum get a final grade of a C if he fails me this quarter. Although, I get the feeling he’s not going to care and put me in at an E anyways.

I will speak to my counselor ASAP. That’s probably the best thing to do, since there’s no way of resolving it. I don’t really want to erupt this into something big either considering there’s only a few weeks of school left.
