Can an average highschool student get a computer science major

Im an average student and planning on pursuing computer science, would this major be to difficult for an average student to get through?

A few questions:
What do you mean by average student? GPA? Test scores? EC’s?
Home state?

What grade are you in currently?
What level of Math have you reached? How are your grades in your Math classes? Do you like Math?
Have you taken any Physics courses? If so, how well did you do and understand the material?
Have you taken an basic programming or computer classes either at your HS or on-line? If so, did you enjoy these classes?

CS is highly competitive at many colleges along with very popular so you need to first make sure this major is what you want to pursue. Then you need to figure out what you have to offer in the terms of Stats and EC’s so you can target schools where you have a chance for an acceptance as a CS major.

I currently have an unweighted 3.2 GPA, I do volunteering at centrastate, and I am in new jersey. As for sats i am aiming to get at least in the 1300’s hopefully. Right now I am a junior in precalc and I have a’s so far and normally get a b+ in math in the past (I am overall better in algebra over geometry. I am in physics and so far i understand it pretty easily. I am going through a online coding course teaching me python right now and ive always been into computers so i enjoy it.

I am planing to apply to Rutgers New Brunswick, TCNJ, and if that doesnt workout possibly go through two years of community college and then into a four year college.

I am not familiar with NJ schools, but you look like you can handle the CS course work. I would try to see if you can find any acceptance stats for CS majors at your target schools so get an idea of your chances.

Best of luck and wish I could be more help. If you enjoy the classes associated with the major, then you should be fine. Having interest in a subject is half the battle in getting solid grades and pushing through in learning the material.

My son is a sophomore at Rowan. Most of his friends are in engineering or CS. It’s challenging, but they are handling it. His friends were “normal” high school students - good students, but not the tippy top. I’d add Rowan to your list of in-state options. The facilities for STEM majors are gorgeous, nice merit, and great on campus housing options.
