Can an engineering student minor in something else?

I’m going to major in biochemical engineering. However, I also want to minor in astronomy. Is it possible to do so? I read the booklet that says the requirements for a Biochem engineering major, and the requirements seem quite burdensome O_O 18 credits (Only for engineering) every term in Freshman year…It seems like there is no space for my minor :/

Not an expert, but I’m pretty sure the answer to your question is “yes.” I believe USC, in general, encourages minors.
My son is planning to major in electrical engineering and is also interested in a music minor.

I know someone who got a mechanical engineering degree in 2008 with a minor in music. He had a lot of AP credits, which made space in his schedule for the music courses.

But I don’t have any AP credits :X I only have 4 credits for AP Chem (I got a 4). That’s it…:(

You can take summer courses for your minor.

So I must take summer courses if I want to minor in something else? (assuming that I have NO AP credits.)

@shinywing: I’m not sure if you need to take summer courses or whatever. But with my case, I want to double with business, and I’ve consulted the deans and such and they recommend that I stay another year. I think astronomy would be easier? I’m assuming there are fewer requirements than for business.

Since most of your classes will be engineering/math/GE…you only have a few slots left for a minor. Unless lots of your GE/math classes overlap with astronomy and can be credited for, you will need extra time - another extra semester of summer school.

It’s definitely possible to major in engineering and minor in something else. I know a few people who do. You should work out the details with your advisor as early as possible though, especially since you’ll probably need a pretty detailed four-year plan to fit everything in.

You might have to either take a few extra classes during the semester or maybe summer classes one summer to fit everything in, but it should be possible. All the Engineering advisors I’ve ever talked to have been very helpful in accommodating my scheduling needs.
