Can anyone help me figure out how to use a GPS to create maps?

<p>I walk regularly in a large (2000 acres) section of national forest. There are a lot of trails and I don’t have much of an internal sense of direction. I get lost fairly regularly. I always find my way back to the car (my dogs have an excellent sense of direction), but I’ve been trying to figure out how to create a map of all the trails. I have no problem walking them to create a track, but I can’t figure out what kind of GPS I would need to then upload the tracks to create a map. I do realize that this could be an ongoing project. </p>

<p>Can anyone help me? I need advice about what kind of GPS and what kind of software I’ll need. Thanks very much!</p>
