can anyone help with a question about missing savings bonds?

Missing or non-existent, I should say. Husband and I are organizationally challenged. We think our two older children each received a few savings bonds lo these many years ago, but we can’t find them. We know where our savings bonds are (yay us - in an actual fireproof box), and we recently blundered across the ones for our youngest daughter (which are now also in the fireproof box). But we can’t find any for our older daughters, and if the younger one received bonds from grandparents and aunts/uncles, it seems reasonable to assume that the older ones did, too.

We’re not talking serious value here. I imagine the total face value would be in the $300 range, based on what we found for the youngest. But neither of us actually remembers receiving them or putting them away. Maybe I wrote them in the “Gifts” section of their baby books, but I can’t seem to remember what I did with those, either …

The treasury website states that one can write them via snail mail to track missing savings bonds. I wonder how they’d feel about looking around for bonds that might never have existed in the first place. Has anyone ever written for this kind of help? Even if not, we’d be grateful for any suggestions you might have.

And now we have a hobby for when the youngest heads off to college in August - excavating the “office.”

We keep ours in the safe deposit box at the bank. Try looking there. Maybe you stuck them there when the kids were babies.

^^^That is where our kids’ savings bonds that were gifts were kept. In fact, we very recently cashed them all in to put toward college loans.

same with us-safe deposit box at the bank

not to change the focus of this thread but we were recently talking about all the kid’s savings bonds. How can these be cashed in tax free if they are in the kids’ names but will be used to pay tuition.

frazzled - I have experience with missing and/or non-existent Series EE bonds. My Mom was sure she had more bonds than she could find, and asked me to help her chase them down.

The people at Treasury will check Treasury records for you, BUT you need to use the appropriate form. It takes a couple of months, but they are thorough in my experience. And no, they don’t mind if the bonds you thought you had were cashed in (or never purchased).

Here is the link to the government’s website that gives the details about the EE/E savings bond tax exclusion:

[Individual - Education Planning](Using bonds for higher education — TreasuryDirect)

Note the bonds can NOT be held in the child’s name to do this.

I have done this successfully! I knew one of the kids had missing bonds because of gp gifting all the kids at the same time - I filled out the form with the info I knew…approximate date, I knew the face value, wasn’t sure whose SS was on bond, but gave a couple…had it notarized and did receive a replacement bond in a few weeks.

You safe-deposit box people are way ahead of us - that’s something we always intended to get, but didn’t. (So I guess that means we shouldn’t bother looking there  ). NewHope and muffy, your posts were exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks so much, all, for the suggestions!

Ok, so it is SAFE DEPOSIT, not safety deposit, right? And it’s judgment, not judgement, (at least in the U.S.) right? At least that’s what I was taught years ago. These are two of my pet peeves, misuse or misspelling, which is now common in print. I know this thread is about lost savings bonds, but I was so happy to see “safe deposit” that I had to comment! But I’ve been told I’m wrong. Just wondering…

Threekids, I have always wondered which was the correct term. Thanks for making me look it up. From wsu.edu:

Oh wow, all these years I said “safety deposit box” but then my bank sent annual rent bills for the “safe deposit box.” So I thought I had been wrong and was sort of embarassed! And I switched to saying Safe instead of Safety. But either is acceptable? I feel vindicated! lol
