Can cats have epilepsy?

Lately my beloved kitty will have short seizures that last a few seconds and then seem fine. Other than these sporadic episodes, she’s fine and eats, drinks and grooms herself as usual. I’m baffled as to what’s going on…
She’s exclusively an indoor cat.

yes, this is sadly a thing. http://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/neurological/ct_epileptic_seizures%20

Even though I am a dog lover, I am saddened when feline friends suffer.

There is also a viral infection that can cause seizures. One of mine had it.

@KKmama what were the viral signs? Did you know your kitty was sick or was it just the seizures?..

We had a dog that had epilepsy. Seizures were only symptom we saw. Had her on anti-seizure meds because it was difficult to watch when she had seizures (especially our kids who were young at the time and didn’t understand at all and got freaked out by it). Meds worked. Every once in a while she would have a seizure and we would look around the house and find the pill that she had spit out.

Have you taken her to the vet?

@lookingforward initially we thought it was her flea collar as some mentioned cats can have severe allergies to them. We took her’s off and the seizures seemed to stop but it’s just in the last three days that they’ve returned so a trip to Vet is in order…:frowning:

Best wishes, @tonymom.

And make sure she’s getting enough fluids.

My now 19 year old cat started having seizures ~ 4 years ago. Did not last long, but happened 3 or 4 times a day. The dogs would come running - Sidney was fine afterwards. Our vet put him on gabapentin which seemed to help for awhile. Took him to a neurologist - who said he was neurologically sound and younger than his years. She suspected allergies - sure enough, he was allergic to fish / seafood. Removed from his diet, seizures ended and he’s still going strong.

@tonymom One of our cats suddenly convulsed and grew very weak. I thought it was a stroke. Fortunately we were on the phone at the time with our vet (in the middle of the night) arranging for her to put down a cancerous rat that was in great distress. Thought it was going to be a 2 for 1 special. But it was some kind of virus - this was 18 years ago so I don’t remember the specific virus.

We also had a cat that had small seizures and a lot of twitching as a result of severe flea bites and/or the flea treatment. That lasted about six months from the time the treatment ended and the fleas were gone.
