Let’s say hypothetically, a student goes to campus for their admitted students’ day and, while at a frat party, gets caught by a cop holding a cup of alcohol and charged for underage possession of alcohol. If the university had found out (somehow, without the student notifying the school), what would happen? What are the chances they would get rescinded, if at all?
Read your terms of admission - is there anything you’d have to report to the school? Does it say anything about behavior, etc.?
In the US, pretty much all college admissions AND continued enrollment are conditional on good behavior, so hypothetically a college could rescind an acceptance or expel a student for a minor in possession charge, particularly if this was on school property (a frat party is ambiguous as that could be on or off campus).
Now obviously there have been many more college kids charged than expelled, so I would guess at least at most colleges something like a first offense probably would not result in rescission or expulsion, although possibly there could be a warning or probation, suspension, ineligibility for certain activities, and so on. But really it is up to the college.
Yup, I have to send in a form that’s on the admissions portal within 48 hours of the incident. It covers legal, personal, academic, disciplinary, and basically all matters. I didn’t submit this form because I thought my school wouldn’t find out and turns out my school found out. I might be cooked but I am writing an email to my admissions rep rn.
I already talked to the dean of student conduct bc she thought I was a current freshman and not an incoming freshman, and during the meeting, she said suspension and expulsion are not possible consequences, especially as a first-time offender. But then, in the end, when I told her I was an incoming freshman, she referred me to the admissions office, which has yet to email me, and she couldn’t say what punishments they might lay down. This meeting happened yesterday by the way so not much time has passed. I just really don’t want to get slapped with an email saying I’m rescinded so currently I’m proactively writing an email to my admissions rep.
As a parent this would be a concern for me for my child because I would expect my underage child to fess up immediately, if not to me, then at least to the powers that be. That would be the mature thing to do.
The issue then is integrity; you weren’t going to fill out the form because you didn’t think they would find out and they did. Yeah that kind of behavior is risky.
You knew you were under age- you were holding a cup of alcohol. If they have a provision, when you signed that admissions form, about being forthright in your application and your behavior, then they may rescind.
The schools want students that aren’t going to be in an aversive headline.
The problem for them is a liability issue. If you had become incapacitated with alcohol consumption, they don’t want that kind of lawsuit. You were on their property and even if you didn’t consume alcohol you were at an underage party that was serving alcohol.
They have a right to admit and rescind whomever they want.
Obviously it is not great you didn’t fill out the form, but at this point I would be as open and contrite as possible, and just hope they prefer a milder sanction to rescission.
Somehow I feel this hypothetic case has more than we’re told. Police don’t usually just show up to Frat Houses and bust minor holding alcohol.
In any event, this is what usually comes up later in life when someone is filling out a moral character determination form to sit for the State Bar or try to get government clearance for a dream office job…
Yeah, I’m working with my school’s counselor on an email to their admissions office right now.
I swear on my life, the cops showed up, more specifically, the ALE (you’ll probably be able to figure out the state of college I’m going to), and just started handing out citations to kids. I already have a lawyer who has dismissed the case by talking to the DA, but the bigger concern is going to college for me, obviously.
If the case is already dismissed, what is the problem?
That my school’s admissions office just found out. I think I said this in a different reply to someone else, but when I had the hearing meeting with my school’s associate dean of student conduct, they thought I was a current freshman. When I informed them that I was an incoming freshman, they said they had to report this to the admissions office and that the decision was in their jurisdiction now. I guess if they reach out to me before I send them an email, I can explain the case was dismissed, so therefore, it’s not a problem??? I don’t know exactly how I’d go about the argument, but I’m mentioning it in my email to my school
Lol I just doxxed my school; update, nvm I was able to edit my school out
I was going to say that your story did not sound implausible to me, but then I looked up ALE and see that it is a NC thing, and yep, I’m in NC.
For in-state, D24’s top choice was UNC Charlotte, and one thing that wildly jumped out was the number of arrests for drug and liquor violations compared to other schools she was looking at. Not sure how much of that was unusual student activity vs. zero tolerance/aggressive enforcement, but it did not go in the plus column (for me) either way.
I don’t know what your school is, but if it’s UNC Charlotte, ECU, App State or NC State I wouldn’t be surprised based on what I saw in the safety reports.
If you already have an attorney, paid the extra couple of hours of fee and let that person handle it for you. That way you don’t have to say anything yourself.
Well, the attorney doesn’t come between me and the school. I still have to represent myself when it comes to talking to my school.
Have you asked?
There are advantages in not having to say anything yourself.
I kid you not I was literally just standing there in the field talking to some friends with a cup in my hand, and a cop ran up to me and started questioning me.
Yup, I totally agree, but it’s a complicated situation. I talked to my school’s college counselor once
my school told me they reached out to their admissions office, and he told me it would be the best idea for me to reach out to my school admissions office through email since they are already supposed to have been notified. I also talked to my attorney, and he’s not able to communicate with the school on my behalf since the school has the right to rescind me for practically anything. It’s not the legal case that my school has an issue with; it’s the fact that there’s some form of evidence that I was underage and in possession of alcohol.
Jesus I keep revealing my school on accident, i might as well just put it out there
