Can common app essay be used as a scholarship essay?

Pretty much what the title says...I've found some scholarships that all require submitting an essay on the same topic that my common app essay is written on. Unfortunately, a couple of these scholarships will publish the winners later on (after admissions decisions come out). Is it okay to send this essay as my scholarship essays or should I write a different one? If somehow I do win this scholarship and my essay is published, will any acceptances be rescinded? Thanks!

Its your essay. You can "double up" (use it for multiple purposes) unless the scholarship app says it has to be a "unique" essay. I would be amazed if what you propose is not done regularly. Good luck.

I agree. If you're happy with it -- and if it isn't going to the same schools you're sending the comm app too -- why not double up?

On those "essay" contests that want to print the "winner's" essay. You should read the rules very carefully. The may require "exclusive publication rights" which is legal speak for "you can't send it anywhere else that may publish it publically".

This "essay" contest may just be fishing for stuff to publish. They call it a prize, but really what it is a rights fee they pay for publishable work. They will pull a "gotcha" and yank back your check (or sue you) when they find it published somewhere else.

This is probably a rare case. It more happens with contests for "short fiction".

Always read the rules.

Thanks for your responses! I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, but I probably will not apply for those scholarships to be on the safe side.
