Can CORE be waived?

Can CORE curriculum be waived? I heard Expo cannot be waived.

For social analysis requirement, I want to take Social Analysis 10: Economics, but that is a full year course, and is there a way to take only a semester of that (by getting 5 on AP Macro or Micro?) Or should I get 5 on both Micro and Macro to get into Econ 1010a, which is a semester course?

AP scores count only for advanced standing. You don’t need to take the exam or get a 5 on it to go into Ec 1010a, you can just opt into it. At the same time, Social Analysis 10 is supposed to be divided up next year so that you can opt to take one semester or the other or both.

The Core cannot be waived. As it stands now, you must fufill the 7 core requirements that are furthest from your concentration. This will change for the class of 2010, but those new requirements also can’t be waived.

And, there are LOTS of other Social Analysis classes besides Ec 10.

Hmm…doesn’t the course catalog say that Ec 1010a need Ec 10 as a prerequisite? Since AP Micro and Macro are Ec10 equivalents, I thought I needed those tests to get into Ec 1010a. Is it really true that I can just hop in to Ec 1010a without Ec 10? (Then, there is no need for me to take those AP Exams.)

I understand that AP scores count for advance standing, but wouldn’t you agree that AP tests can place me in upper classes? For example, to take Physics 16, I need 5 on AP Phys C Mechanics.

Thanks for help. I need answer quickly !

This is Harvard we’re talking about. you don’t need a 5 on any AP tests to take any classes. If you want to take Physics 16, just convince the professor you can handle the work, and you can take it.

You can hop right into Ec1010a if you wish, but I have a friend who did this and found it to be extremely difficult. You might just want to stick with Ec10 to test the waters first.

AP tests won’t really do you much good at Harvard unless you want to graduate early.

I wouldn’t mind taking Ec 10, except the fact that is a full year course, and I would hate to spend that much time to meet the Social Analysis requirement. Is it true that Ec 10 is going to be split up?

Also, is the new CORE this year going to have more requirements?

Edit: Is Econ 1010a more difficult than Ec10? I mean it is a more advanced class, but is it necessarily harder?

by getting a 5 on micro or macro you will be allowed to split ec10 (ie only take the semester of ec that you didn’t get a 5 on). This becomes irrelevant if they split it up anyway.

Ec1010a or b would not count as an SA core. You might want to consider the 1011a/b series (if you’re interested in Ec), it uses calculus, unliked 1010.

Candlize-In some science concentrations, you can get concentration credit if you skip intro classes and have the equivalent AP 5s, even if you’re not doing advanced standing.

justforgetme
Ec 1010a DOES count as Social Analysis. It is one of the cross-listed courses. Correct me if I am wrong ;)

1010a, 1010b, 1011a, 1011b all count as SA cores! Sorry for the misinformation + thanks ultimatemath for the correction.
