Hi, I am a senior in high school. I want to major in biomedical engineering and my first choice is Pitt. I heard that the Forbes Hall is the new SPACE hall where all engineers live and help each other out. Academics being my first focus, I will definitely room there, along with the other engineers.

Being at Forbes Hall means that I’m not staying at the much more popular towers. I’m not gonna lie: I LOVE partying, and I expect a lot of it in college. My question is, do engineers in the Forbes Hall have the same access to social events as kids in the towers? Will I easily be able to make friends with other students from other buildings? Does being in Forbes Hall in any way restrict me from any of the parties happening on campus?

P.S. I haven’t applied yet. My application request will go through in about two weeks and the transcript and supplemental information and essay will be sent in about 17 days. With a 3.5 weighted GPA and 2080 SATs and a bunch of ECs and APs, do you think I am a safe bet to get into the Swanson School of engineering if I apply this late?

I live in Sutherland, in the Honors Community, but I know a lot of people in Forbes. Basically from what I hear it’s pretty much half and half between your stereotypical “nerdy” engineer majors and “average” college partiers. And even though you won’t be in the towers, Forbes Hall is SO close, it doesn’t even matter. In my experience, everyone was hanging out with people from their dorm or floor for the first couple of weeks, but now people are branching out and most have friends in different dorms.

Also, most of the partying doesn’t really take place in Towers even though its the “party dorm”, all the parties are at the frats. But you will see hordes of freshmen leaving there to go to the parties together, so its not hard to just go up and meet people to go with.

Yeah, I’m definitely not gonna be the typical “nerdy” engineer…if I get in, that is. Do you have an idea of what my chances might be of getting into Swanson if everything that is needed for the application is sent by the end of the month?

For what it’s worth, we were told at PittStart that the avg math SAT for the entering engineering class (those who accepted and were attending beginning this fall) was 700 - not sure what the range was.

I would imagine that the engineering school is definitely skewed to high math SAT scores; also, Pitt does a good job of attracting high stats, OOS students with offers of scholarships. However, I don’t think you should be discouraged from applying if your SAT math is less than 700- there will be likely plenty of students in the 600s as well. Just get your app in asap for the best chances!
