Can English be an Extra-Curricular?

I’m applying to Choate and on their online pre-interview application they lists English as an academic extra-curricular. I was wondering what they mean by that.

Where I live English is a second language that’s taught 5th grade onwards, but I lived abroad when I was small and learnt to read and write in English there. I’ve never been with my class for English lessons but had private ones because I was so far ahead.

I love reading and after three months in the English speaking country I lived in, I was reading book 4-5 years ahead of my age in English (read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when I was 5). My parents weren’t pushy at all, I just wanted to read them.

I don’t say this to brag but I’ve always loved reading and have read a lot of books in English so I was just thinking whether or not I can include that in my app. I’ve never been involved with any group, just done it on my own. I do read regularly though, about 2-3 books a week.

Sure, you can definitely list English as an extracurricular.

As for books you read, it’s really up to you but I would mention those in my interview but not on the actual app, because anyone can really say they read those books whether or not they actually have. But if it means a lot to you, go for it.
