Can I accept one of the offers?

Hey guys, I’ve applied to McGill for Applied Science, specifically Mechanical Engineering as my first choice and Civil Engineering as my second. The thing is, I’ve been accepted for Civil Eng., but put on the Waiting list for Mech. Eng.

My Civil Eng. offer expires in about a week’s time and I really want to up my chances of getting into new res by accepting it early. So if I accept my Civil offer as a precaution in case I don’t get Mech., will they cancel my Mech. Engineering application?

If anybody can relate to this or reply ASAP it would be much appreciated, whenever I come to accept the Civil Offer it says:

“Note: confirmation of your intention to register for this program will result in the cancellation of all other offers of admission…”

and it just scares the crap out of me, cause I don’t want them canceling the more important application.

Accepting early won’t increase your chances at getting into New Rez…it’s a lottery and I believe you have until mid-June to either be in the lottery or not. Other than that, I think if you accept an offer for your second choice, all applications to lower choices are cancelled, but that your first choice remains under consideration - you might want to call up Admissions and double check that though. They’re usually quite helpful and would know better than any of us what the policy is exactly.

Yes, if you accept Civil Engineering, your application for Mechanical Engineering is automatically withdrawn. (as it is explicited stated when you came to accept the civil offer). The bottom line is that you can only register for one course. You can wait for the Mechanical decision in which case your Civil offer might be offered to someone else, or you can just accept the civil decision and give up the Mechanical decision. I would definitely call McGill to see if they can “review” faster or if there’s anything you can do, but I was in a similar decision, and I chose my second choice in a heartbeat because I was afraid if I hold out, I’d lose them both. Hope this helped.
