Hi everyone. I’m a High School Senior planning on majoring in Environmental Engineering. When I was looking at the available majors for one the colleges on my list (NJIT) I noticed that Environmental Engineering wasn’t on there. The college itself has a department called “The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering” however it doesn’t really have EE as a major, just similar things like Civil Engineering and Environmental Studies. Am I allowed to apply as a different major to a different college? I was also thinking that Applied Physics is a cool major, so would it be ok for me to apply as a Physics major one place and as an Engineering major in another place? Thanks in advance.

Most liberal arts colleges do not ask you to select a major, instead they ask for your interests. That’s a big difference. Colleges understand that the vast majority of students change their intended major during their 4 years of college – so they don’t hold students to the choices they make on their application (unless you are applying to a specific school within a university). So, yes . . . it’s perfectly acceptable to select another interest when applying to colleges – especially if that college does not offer the major you most want.

@gibby Thanks for the insight, but I actually am applying to a specific school within the college (NJIT has something called the Albert Dorman Honors College). Is that still ok? Like, I can still apply as a different major to a different college, but I wouldn’t be allowed to switch majors when I chose to attend that specific school, right?

Why don’t you contact the college to find out?
