Can I apply as a freshman while I am studying at a university in freshman year?

I have not completed my freshman year at my current university. I do not think we will be able to finish it by the time of admission at the university in US. There is too much political turmoil in the country that is disrupting our studies. I am thinking of applying to georgia tech, Illinois at urbana, carnegie mellon and university of michigan. Can I apply as a freshman to all of them or atleast some of them? I have checked their website and there was nothing binding me to apply as a transfer applicant.

Sometimes they have the restriction that if you have taken college classes since graduating from high school, you must apply as a transfer (or something to that effect). I would check very carefully for these schools and perhaps contact the admissions offices to verify the possibility, especially given your unique situation.

As far as i checked there was no restriction in these 4 universities. Illinois at Urbana champaign says that I have to apply as a transfer if I have started or taken any course at any university so that is self explanatory and I will be applying as a transfer student there and it also says on their website that if I have less than 30 credits SAT/High School stuff gets more significance so that is fine with me. Btw I have completed 19.5 credits with 2 not so good grades among 8 in total. I also do not like the style of studies here (everything is memorizing based). At CMU, Michigan and purdue absolutely nothing is written binding me to apply as a transfer student. It seems completely my choice. At Gatech it says “If you have attended another college or university after completing high school, and you are interested in attending Georgia Tech to complete your degree or obtain a second undergraduate degree, you should apply as a transfer student.” I will applying at a different program anyway (I do not like the major I am studying in at my current university and even though it the best/most preferred major I cannot change to any other).

Email each university indicating that you will be forced to leave your university before taking final exams due to the political instability/strife in your country, will you be considered as a freshman or as a transfer?
However, if you are an international student (not a refugee) be aware that there basically isn’t any financial aid for international transfers.

I will not basically be an international applicant. I have US citizenship by birth so I will complete FAFSA.

However, while a US citizen living outside the US may receive need-based financial aid, be aware that state universities other than UVA or UNC-CH won’t give much to you as a non-resident.

You may want to see if any safeties with large merit scholarships will allow you to apply as a frosh: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-20.html</a></p>

Michigan’s rules: https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1512</a></p>

If you are interested in a career as an officer in the US military, the service academies only admit frosh/plebes, regardless of prior college credit.

Thank u all for all the help. I do not expect/need full rides. My parents are more concerned about getting into a good university. Living cost and a portion of the fee they can thankfully bear.

Check again. ALL colleges have specific policies regarding who applies as a fr and who as a transfer, even though they may not express it clearly on their website.

The UMichigan transfer requirements page says:

[Transfer Student Requirements | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](Transfer Applicants | University of Michigan Office of Undergraduate Admissions)

For LSA, the largest college:

[New Transfer Students | LSA Students | University of Michigan](http://www.lsa.umich.edu/students/academicsrequirements/academicpolicies/residencepolicyandtransfercredit/newtransferstudents)

Since you’re looking at Tech schools, here’s the COE:

[Welcome, Prospective Transfer Students! | Michigan Engineering](http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/admissions/undergrad/transfer)

For CMU, the website is poor, but it is apparent that transferring varies by school, see the section at the lower left titled, Transfer students will only be considered for one college or program within Carnegie Mellon:

[Carnegie Mellon Admission |](http://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/transfer-admission)

You need to call/email CMU and ask them how you should apply.

Purdue also says that transfer policies depend on the school you’re applying to and mentions some transfers needing between 12-24 sem credits:

https://www.admissions.purdue.edu/transfer/index.php</a></p>

Again, you need to call/email and ask.

For GATech, it doesn’t matter that you’re changing your major, you’re still a transfer applicant.

I’ll add, if you don’t finish your second semester of fr year, there are some colleges where you can apply as a fr applicant if you have less than a year of full time post-HS coursework. H&Y are two I know of, but then there’s their acceptance rates…

thank you so much entomom! :open_mouth: that is bad news. acceptance rates are way lower for transfer applicants. I do not want to hamper my application by applying as a transfer student. The way our country and the internal problems at the university are going I do not know how long it will take for me to graduate. Can I still apply as a freshman or will my application be cancelled instantly?

The applications for fr and transfers are different, eg. essays, LORs, college official’s report, etc. When you apply to colleges you need to send all prior college transcripts, so they would see immediately that you don’t qualify as a fr and your application would be incomplete because you haven’t provided the materials necessary for transfers.

Yes, acceptance rates can be lower for transfers, particularly to selective colleges, but to apply as a fr when you are clearly a transfer applicant would not be a smart thing to do. My advice is to not live up to your member name ;).

Let me add, the burden is on YOU to find out the school policy for fr vs. transfer applicant and apply correctly. Don’t think that you can submit a fr application out of ignorance and expect a school to just let you sneak by, not gonna happen.
