Can I apply for med schools having done an undergraduate degree overseas?

Hi guys,

I am from New Zealand and about to undergo an undergraduate bachelors degree in pharmacy, engineering or optometry (havent chosen yet). Pharmacy is at the University of Otago and Engineering and Optometry is at the University of Auckland. Do any of these degrees allow me to apply postgraduate to American Medical Schools?. If so, which one of these courses would be more preferred? Also, if I complete a pharmacy bachelor degree in NZ. Can I do my postgraduate phd in America and work as a pharmacist in America or do I have to start my pharm degree all over again?

Thank you very much

Are you interested in medical school to become a doctor or are you interested in pharm school to become a pharmacist?

You will have a very difficult time of it - less than half of US med schools even accept international applicants, and then you’ll have to be very competitive. There’s also the cost of a US medical education, which can be extravagant, to think about.

I’m not sure how this works, but here is California’s thoughts on the matter (and they tend to be the most restrictive state on these things):

Optometry is not a medical degree and will give you a 0% chance on entry into a US medical school. Pretty much the same for pharmacology. Engineering gives you a small chance. Realistically your only chance of attending a US medical school would be through a US undergraduate degree and even this would be very difficult without a green card or substantial personal funds.

^This. Plus, most medical schools require that you do your pre-reqs at a US college/university.

I think** much less than half **of med schools accept int’l students. In my limited research, I think I’ve only seen one or two schools that will accept a few int’l students.

I don’t know if that’s because of the large amounts of fed aid med schools get or because of state aid, or what. However, if it is due to the large amount of gov’t aid and very limited number of med school seats, then it makes sense that those seats need to go to domestic students who will be practicing in the US.
