Hi, soooo this is my story that I want to share and get advice that might help others as well
I took a gap year because my guidance counselor advised me to. That way , I would be able to take the tests I needed and prepare other things so I could apply to this school she suggested that has great financial aid and I fell in love with.
Unfortunately, I applied only to that school because my counselor guaranteed me that they would definitely accept me. My counselor did tell me about other schools I could apply to, but I only wanted that one school and was positive. I ended up getting waitlisted and then told that their waitlisted has closed.
An online friend I had made through College Confidential has recommended me two nice schools with deadlines still open that offer financial aid to international students, which are st thomas aquinas college and philander smith college. The first doesn’t give 100%financial aid, but, they can give you additional aid if you qualify(I asked them and just applied, if you’re interested, if they accept me and give me additional aid I’ll tell you more about it). At the second one it is possible for them to help meet 100%of your need, if you apply apply for different scholarships (please ask them more about this if interested).
I don’t and can’t stay for another year at home, so I want to go to a college in this fall but transfer to another college I prefer (like ivy schools) in or after my first year. Can I tell them I want to go to their college but transfer in or after my first year to another for some reasons? I don’t want to seem rude
Sorry this was so long, but I thought I might be able to help anyone else who’s going through the same thing. MORAL OF THE STORY: DON’T APPLY JUST TO ONE SCHOOL, EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU’RE SURE TO GET IN. Play safe Everything will be ok, if it’s not ok, it’s not the end:-)
You do not have to ask your college or university for permission to transfer out. You just apply as a transfer, see if you get in anywhere, and if you get enough aid. Then you decide if you still want to leave.
You are n international student who needs a lot of aid. It will be hard for you to get admitted anywhere here and get the aid you need. It will be even harder to get admitted as a transfer student and get the aid you need.
Unless taking a second gap year means that your life is in danger, you are better off taking another gap year and applying to a better list of colleges.
You should not count on being able to transfer. If you need significantly financial aid then your chances to transfer to one particular highly ranked school are at best unknown and probably low. As such I would not start at any college in the US unless you would be happy staying at the same school for a full four years.
I agree with @happymomof1. I think that you probably need to take another gap year.
Thanks for the advice! I can’t afford to take another gap year though… I guess I’ll have to wait and see
