Can I apply to new universities if I have a deferred admission at one university?

Hi, last year I was admitted by a university and deferred my admission for a GAP year. I now want to apply to new universities for it seems there are more opportunities for me there. What do I need to say to the university that deferred my admission? How will it affect my new application cycle?

I’m interested in this too. My child deferred admission because of health reasons, and is not sure if they will be able to go far away next year. But they would still like to start college and live at home, even if they can’t go away.

Have you decided that you don’t want to attend the deferred university? Then send them an email and let them know that your plans have changed and that you won’t be attending. Thank them for admitting you last year and for arranging the deferral.

I remember having digitally signed a deferral agreement for the deferment, should I be worried about my school communicating this to the new schools I’m applying to?

You can answer this question better than we can? What terms were in the deferral? Did your student sign a statement saying s/he would not apply to other schools without notifying this deferred school? I hope you’re not asking if it’s ok to break a contract with a school.

Some colleges explicitly state that if you defer you cannot apply to other schools. Read the agreement you signed and adhere to it.

Hi, do you think if it’s possible to contact my deferred school and ask them to withdraw my deferred my admission without telling anyone I intend to reapply, of course, this happens before I reapply?

I would contact admissions at your deferred school and ask them. I would not expect them to take this personally at all.

As many have said above, you will need to read exactly what you agreed with your current school.

Usually, you commit to attend in the next academic year in exchange for their agreement to hold your seat, and if you wish to apply to other schools, you need to “uncommit” first. With that said, some schools are more flexible and may be willing to guarantee you admission even if you are applying to other schools. You need to understand the terms of your gap year deferral first.

Most colleges will have that written on their websites directed towards people who took gap years. I recommend contacting your school too through phone and email.
