I will be attending Yale this fall and am wondering if they permit students to bringing game consoles and tvs to their residential college dorms? Does anyone know if they allow this and, if so, how popular it is? Thanks so much!
Yale is an “All you can learn smorgasbord”, with something amazing happening on a regular basis. Are you sure that a video game is the best use of your one-and-only college life? (Sorry, but sometimes I revert to ‘Dad’ mode!)
@ElMimino I actually am not a big gamer, and I haven’t played in months I just got an xbox recently as a gift and am wondering if I will be able to bring it with me to college? Plus I am in an “all Microsoft” family, so the xbox features (like music and videos) will be compatible with my phone and computer, so it might be beneficial to bring with me. Just curious!
We get our suitemate assignments later this month – I’d suggest working with them on how best to set up your space.
There is no rule against bringing it. But here’s my suggestion (also in Dad mode): don’t bring it when you move in. Wait until Thanksgiving or winter break. The first part of your freshman year should be used to get out and meet lots of people. Yes, I know that gaming can be a bonding experience–so go game in the suite of somebody else who brought one.
A bigger problem will be the “all Microsoft” family living in the Apple wilds. J/k. My son used video games sometimes at the end of the day to unwind. Your Xbox will not be confiscated at the gate, but Hunt’s advice is good.
Freshman rooms vary considerably, but my son’s common room could not have accommodated a TV. Other rooms have space for a couch and a TV (or two).
Thanks so much for all of your guys advice!! I was planning on using it mainly for just music and video apps (like Pandora, Spotify, Netflix, etc.) to play in my room, but obviously that is dependent on my roommate and everything. I’m not a very big gamer anyway, and I can’t even imagine I will have time to play anything considering how busy I will be. I’ll wait and make my decision when I know more!! Thanks again!!
You’re going to have a great time! I forgot that the xbox is a swiss-army-knife of a console!
Nothing to stop you from doing that. Although, you may wanna initially hold off on bring it.
NOT going into dad mode here (I’m a pretty avid gamer), but you need to get used to the college transition first. At least, you need to establish your routines, and assess how much free time you have for gaming, if you want to game.
As for popularity: it depends on major, dorms, people. Some dorms have groups that like to game, and certain majors (mostly STEM, from what I’ve noticed) are more entrenched in gaming culture. So…make of that what you will.
My D uses her laptop for Netflix, etc. That is when she wasn’t studying, hanging with friends, playing intramural sports, seeing friends in the dining hall for dinner, doing her community service, etc. You will be very busy the first few months. You may find that you really won’t use it as much as you think.
