can i call this "original research"?

i love research and i would love to just research my whole life =] so…
i planned on publishing a research paper…but the categories are “original research” or “review papers”(same format, but only about a current research that is going on-- that i didn’t do).

I am going to intern at a prof’s lab over the summer, and i don’t think i will do research on my own topic. I am going to be researching my prof’s topic…so if i want to write about what i found in the lab and other new knowledge that our lab group was able to gain due to my contribution, do i call it “original research” or “research review”? obviously, original research papers are seen as more prestigious, right?

but it’s weird…cuz on my college app, it will say i did research on “~~~” and then it will say i published a review paper (not research paper!?!) ON THE SAME TOPIC. can’t i just call that research original?? i mean, i conducted the research…! it’s just that, it wasn’t my very originally formulated topic…

i am not doing anything for the sake of getting into college, don’t get me wrong. i just wish i could write about this research as mine, not a third point of view, as if i never even had my hands on this research.

what do you guys think?

A research paper in what journal/periodical?

It seems to me that it is original research but unless the prof specifically allows it, you most likely wont be able to publish because it’s their work. Unless you are intimately involved and make significant contributions, you are considered more like an assistant than a researcher.

You can still give an abstract on college apps but most likely you wont be able to publish. I might be wrong though. It just depends.

you may be a coauthor if it is published, since you put in some work. I agree with above post.

You are an intern, do not over credit yourself, it appears foolish and the adcoms will see right through your claims.
The professor will write in his LOR your contributions to the lab.

Call yourself what you most closely identify with based on your actual role in the lab, whether that be coauthor or intern.

Also, isn’t there a place on the CommonApp to expound on an EC? Clearly, this is the most important activity in your life, so use that space to explain precisely your role.
