Can I deposit two colleges?

I thought I was definitely going to U of MD so I deposited the money and confirmed my enrollment…now I’m probably going to UW seattle instead…would I get fined by UMD if I end up going to UW?

No but you should contact them to withdraw your acceptance as soon as you really decide so they can open that slot to someone else.

I don’t think they will refund your deposit though - at least not entirely.

You cannot accept UW unless you withdraw from U of MD. You need need to talk to U of MD first, get them to accept your withdrawal and then accept U of W. That is the right way to do it. U of MD is within its rights to keep the deposit and return nothing or return a small part of the deposit.

It’s really not a big deal. All you have to do is send an email to U of MD admission’s dept. and tell them to withdraw your acceptance because after re-evaluating your situation, you have chosen to attend a different college. If the policy at U of MD is that the deposit is refundable if contacted in writing before May 1st, then be sure to include a request for the return of your deposit in your email to the admission’s office. On the other hand, if the deposit is non-refundable, you will not get it back.

The worst case scenario is that you don’t get your deposit back.

PS–Make sure you keep a couple of hardcopies of the email correspondences between you and U of MD regarding withdrawing your acceptance and the request for return of your deposit (make sure to only make the request if it is refundable).

You can accept at two, then withdraw from one (it is not improper to do so). Penalty depends on school: if you withdraw before May 1 many will give you some or all of your deposits back; if you withdraw after May 1, you often lose all deposits.
