So far, it looks like I’m going to San Jose State for Civil Engineering (I got rejected by the architecture schools I applied for). After getting my bachelor’s, I want to get a MArch. Will grad schools look at my GPA and how high should it be in order to have at least a decent chance of getting accepted? Plus, do schools like Cal Poly Pomona need a portfolio? And what classes should I consider taking now in order to be more prepared for MArch?

Don’t know about Cal Poly Pomona specifically, but all the MAch schools that I know of require a portfolio. I don’t believe there is an expectation that you have architectural work in the portfolio, but they want to see some creative work; sketching, photography, painting, etc.

All the schools will look at your GPA and GRE’s. As far as coursework preparation I would focus on art, graphics, art history. Anything to show an interest in design. You are going to be in great shape when it comes to the math and structures requirements, so focus your electives on broadening your perspective.

You are more determined than I was, because to me the thought of slogging through 4 years of civil engineering to get to a 3 year MArch program seems pretty daunting.
