Can I get accepted into New Florida College or an Ivy League university?

Hey there. So basically, I slacked through an online high school and attained a GPA of 3.11. I’m nineteen years old and starting community college this fall and working towards an AA transfer degree. Will the AA guarantee me admission into New Florida College if I have a decent GPA? Since I scored low on the placement tests, I’m taking remedial classes this fall, and those show up on transcripts. Could that potentially hurt my chances of getting accepted into NCF or an Ivy League university such as MIT? MIT might be a pipe dream for me, but I’d like to at least get into NCF.

Thanks, I’d love to become a researcher one day.

Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, UPenn

MIT is not an Ivy but it rivals them by being extremely prestigious. It (and FCA for that matter) might not accept you because your low GPA in high school and low placement test scores reflect badly on you as a student. Then again, if you show good effort and do EXTREMELY WELL in your remedial classes, it might be okay. Going above and beyond outside of community college will also help. Just make sure to craft an EXTREMELY CONVINCING story through your transfer applications.

Btw, what do you wish to major in should you enter one of these schools?

@ally23 Ivies and MIT (which is not an Ivy League school) are very likely out of reach for you unless you do extremely well in your upcoming classes and have something that shows very good potential. You won’t find many “remedial” classes at MIT and probably not at the Ivies either.

@AL Computer Science. It’s fine if I can’t get into some top notch university, as long as I can get into NCF. I’ll aim for a 4.0 GPA. I like NCF because they’re nearby, have great professors and a very solid CS program with a heavy emphasis on writing/research. And the remedial classes are non-credit courses/won’t affect my GPA, but they’ll still show up, so I’ll score very well on them.

I’d also like to add that NCF prepares students for graduate school and you must do a senior thesis before graduating. I’d like to at least do MIT or Ivy League graduate school.

NCF is possible if you maintain a 3.7+ GPA (that’s VERY hard to do in college - plan to dedicate 3 hours in preparation/homework for each class period.)
FAU’s Wilkes Honors College is also very good for research, plus obviously FSU, UF…
