In order to be eligible for federal aid, you have to be enrolled as a regular, degree-seeking student. Given your situation, I would say that the answer is no, unfortunately.

Have you graduated high school?

yeah i just graduated a month ago.

will it be expensive to just take a math class? or no im going to modesto junior college but i should probably ask them

You could have done it over summer, but a CC class should not be cost prohibitive. In the meantime you could do some self study, khan academy, online free math help, you could look at the placement test for your upcoming course for the kind of math you need. You don’t suck at math, you just need need to work on it. Go over the math you completed high school if your grades were poor, and start relearning with the amazing resources you can find online, youtube, khan, etc. Even homeschooling books. You might find stuff used that might help.

yeah mate ive been using khan academy completely learned pre algebra on my way to algebra and yes i did take an assessment test before khan and i got placed in like 3rd grade math, but that was like 3 weeks ago and u gotta wait two months in order to take it again but in two month school starts. im just a f!uking mess but thanks for the feedback!

not going to college may be an option i think but idk thats the thing, i need to completely master algebra for the electrician aptitude test to get an apprenticeship at a trade school

My daughter has dyscalculia (a learning disorder similar to dyslexia except it affects how people learn math). They key to learning math for her has been to start from what she knew and start adding skills from there.

If your math is truly on a grade school level, you need to go back and review those concepts until you own them. Can you take a gap year and work through the modules on Aleks.com or Khan Academy? I think Aleks costs $20/month but Khan may be free. If paying for classes will be a challenge, don’t start until you’re in a position to do well in them.

Our community college gives a (free) math assessment test to help place you in the appropriate math class. Have you spoken to anyone at your JC? They’ve advised tons of people in the same boat as you.

yeah i took the assesment and did atrocious but i havent covered math in over 3 years and never really payed attention in school but ive been using khan academy and completed pre algebra with a breeze i know most of the stuff just forgot how to do them, also parents are a big problem since they want me to go to college full time and get money but i dont want money and whana study math at home but ofcourse they said no so yeah im a fkin mess haha but it takes 60 days to retake the assessment and school starts in august so idk and i havent even registered for classes but oh well anyways thanks

If you were placed in a remedial math class, it is likely you won’t get college credit for it, and thus it isn’t part of your total credits when you apply for financial aid. Don’t just sign up for a math class until you understand how it works with financial aid.

Do a placement test, saxon homeschooling (google that) has a seemingly fairly comprehensive placement test for their math, but I am sure there are alternatives. If you have to start at prealg, so be it. As per Austin, going back and solidifying basic mathematical concepts is probably key. That means repetition and practise, but it is important to get that math is not something you are intrinsically bad at.

Do you remember whar the placement test was called? A lot of community colleges use the Accuplacer. You can search for free Accuplacer practice tests, and try them to see what your scores are like.

My GED students also like the videos and practice at PatrickJMT.com for math review. You can use those as a supplement with the Khan Academy ones.

I think it’s terrific that you want to go to trade school! Can the counselors there help you with choosing the right math classes? The information about tuition and fees at Modesto CC should be right on their website. I expect that just one math class won’t be too much money.

What do you mean when you write that your parents want you to go to college full time and get money? Do they want you to give some of that money to them? That isn’t how it is supposed to work. The money should just go to cover your own expenses.

I’m also confused by your phrasing. In your initial post you ask what you have to do to get the college to “pay” you. You don’t get “paid” for attending college. The federal Pell grant would be sent directly to the school to cover your tuition. There is aid for part-time study (fewer than 12 credits), but remedial credits don’t count in those credits.
