can i get fired?

so i’ve just started a new job. Officially, the position only requires me to know english and when i interview for this job, i told them that i only knew english.

My work is done in english but there are other people in my group who speak both french so the group meetings are sometimes in french. I don’t know french so and i’m wondering if my job is at risk??

any advice?

You should just ask… Even if by asking you risk your job, you’re already in trouble if the meetings are in a language you don’t understand.

They’re not going to fire anybody for not knowing French. Talk to your supervisor/manager and let them know that you feel uncomfortable at meetings where they’re speaking French, and one of two things will happen: either they will start speaking English, or they’ll let you skip the meetings (and maybe read a trascript afterwards).

My freshman year RA got fired from his first job after 3 weeks for being a d-bag. If the job doesn’t require french and you did not misrepresent yourself, you should be fine. If they do fire you it will probably be for some other reason.

Go ahead and start learning the language anyway. It will show dedication and sounds like it would be useful in your situation.

Off topic, I once sat near my brother-in-law while he was on a conference call that was in french, german, and english simultaneously.
