Can I get into a good university with a GED?

I am about to enter my junior year of high school, although I will be taking senior-level courses and am so far scheduled to graduate early with the class of 2017. However, I need a P.E. credit before I can graduate and I cannot take that class if I am going to take my third foreign language course which is required by many schools that I am applying to. I have good scores and am taking/have taken many AP courses and have done well in them. My GPA is good as well. I just do not want to stay in high school for another year for one course which will not affect my academic standing. Can I still get into a good university if I get my GED?

Early graduation is an oft-asked question. If you search, you’ll find many threads. What sorts of colleges do you consider “good”? For tippy top ones, graduating early isn’t a good thing. But if your sights are set more for the larger pack of schools, it’s an option. I invite you to look at some of those other threads.

Speak with your high school guidance counselor about ways to pick up that missing PE credit. For example, you might be able to take a class at a local community college this summer that could fulfill the requirement.

You also need to know that very few places absolutely require three years of foreign language for reasons like the one you describe here. Sometimes there simply is no way to fit it into a student’s schedule. If that ends up being your situation, your guidance counselor can discuss that in his/her letter of recommendation.
