Can I get into a top college with my stats?

I would like to go to University of Chicago or maybe Notre Dame, possibly Northwestern, Can i get in with my stats?

ACT 28
GPA Unweighted 4.20
Weighted 4.56
Class Rank 148/533

Notre Dame:
Incoming Class Academic Profile (mid 50% ranges)
Fifty percent of the admitted class scored or were ranked between the numbers below. 25% of the class admitted scored or were ranked above the numbers below, and 25% of the class admitted scored or were ranked below the numbers below.
32 – 34 on the ACT
1% – 5% rank in class

U of Chicago:
Top 10% - 85%
Top 20% - 95%
ACT Middle 50% - 29-34

They’re both going to be reaches with those numbers, but it depends on whether you’re a strong writer, motivated, great ECs, etc.

i don’t see any of those happening. at first glance, you look competitive because of your gpa, but your rank shows that you just have a high one because your school must inflate grades. also your ACT is crazy low.

You would need a top 10% rank and around a 32 ACT to be even remotely competitive for the schools you listed.

Who really cares about a top school, your scores are fine for most universities…don’t fall into the top college hype.

“don’t fall into the top college hype”

Many students seek what they feel is the best college for themselves, rather than one in the group of “most universities.” I say strive for what you think is the best for you, even if others think it’s a “top” school.

I think the rank is what it is because my school is pretty good academically,

National Rank-1642 out of 19379
State Rank-98 out of 754

Apply to all if you want–they are all reaches for you. Just be sure to find a few others that are matches/safeties. On those schools, find places you would really be happy going, not just a ‘fall back’ that you would hate.

What do you want to study? What do you like about Notre Dame, U Chicago and NW? That might help you figure out a match/safety that will be a good fit for you.

Wow, a 28 isn’t that bad is it?

Want to study Pre Med curriculum.

your ACT and your class rank will be more important than your GPA per se. Being in the top third even at a competitive high school make these schools reaches, and being below or near the bottom of the middle 50% in admitted student scores adds to that, I have to say.

Ok so now where do I direct my attention. I guess Penn is out, ha ha. but really, suggestions please on some good quality schools I can get into with a good pre med program.

thanks

^^ Plus, it depends on the school; GPA + test scores + rank together may count for as little as 20% of admission criteria.

Getting into med school has more to do with your performance in college and your MCAT score than where you go to college.

Wow, tear me down some more. holy crap.

Ok so now where do I direct my attention. I guess Penn is out, ha ha. but really, suggestions please on some good quality schools I can get into with a good pre med program.

thanks

You’re definitely a good student and you will get into a good school–but, it’s a competitive world these days so that’s why I said your original choices are all reaches–they reject a lot of very good students. Doesn’t mean you don’t have a shot!

For pre-med, consider, as a safety, your state flagship–If you’d be willing to go to it. Usually a financial bargain, too. What state are you in?

Since you seem like you are drawn to the Chicago area, if money isn’t a factor, consider Loyola U Chicago or Depaul, both really good schools and I think a notch down in selectivity, so you’d be more likely to be a competitive applicant there.

If you haven’t already, go on collegeboard dot com and create a profile for yourself. Then you can see how you stack up in the historic field of accepted students. It can help you see how your chances look, and what is most important for each schools.

Other ideas: Case Western is very good for sciences, as is University of Pittsburgh.

This thread was doing pretty good untill they moved it, that stinks.

Thanks Paperplane, That was very informative. Yes, I live in Illinois.

Way to kill a thread, What did you do that for?
