Hi Guys, I know that there are many considerations other than simply grades to get into a top tier college like Duke, but I didn’t do so well this year. Last year my GPA was a 102 and I took two APs. But this year, as a sophomore, I got 1 B without the 7 honors points, and the rest of my grades were low A’s. By GPA dropped down to a 99. I will try to do well Junior year, but will my low performance sophomore year knock me out of the running?
As you said, “there are many considerations other than simply grades.” One B won’t doom your application; conversely, perfect grades don’t come close to guaranteeing admission. All admissions officers emphasize that they like to see applicants who pursue some passion outside of the classroom–whatever that may be for you.
You’re just a sophomore. Don’t worry so much about grades–go have some fun.
You will be judged relative to your unique context. If you go to an extremely competitive school, then having a slight dip in grades is not such a big deal. One of the most important factors is your class rank. Are you within the top 5% of your class?
Stay in top 10% of your class, making almost all A’s in difficult classes, and that portion of your application will be up to standard.
Not at all. Your overall GPA is fantastic, and that’s what matters. Keep in mind that not everyone who is accepted to Duke or any other prestigious school has a 4.0 unweighted (if they have rigorous schedules, that is). Continue working hard and aim for As in all of your APs next year. Remain in the top 10% of your class, as well. With these factors kept in mind, I am sure you will qualify for Duke academically.
I don’t think I am, because a lot of kids who don’t take Ap classes have a higher rank since they have better grades. Our school doesn’t rank so I am not sure.
Low performance? 99 isn’t exactly low, even by dukes standards…
That being said, GPA is not the sole criteria for getting into Duke. A bad GPA doesn’t mean you won’t get in, as a good GPA doesn’t mean you will.
