Can I get into NYU and/or UCLA?

Hello! I am a senior from Kansas and applied to both NYU and UCLA for a B.A. in political science. I got a 1360 on the SAT and have a 3.88 unweighted GPA (weighted is a 4.4) and I got a 720 on my Biology M subject test. I am the editor-in-chief of the yearbook, I participate in 3 national honor societies (Spanish, science and just regular NHS) and 1 international honor society for journalism. I also participate in the We the People program which is only offered in one HS per congressional district in KS. I ran all of my essays for both colleges (and the rest of my colleges) by my AP Lit teacher and she really liked them (she went to Baylor which is like huge and unheard of bc most teachers in KS either went to KU or K-State so I really trust her judgement). So after all of this mumbo-jumbo, do I have a shot?

I also am in all AP classes this year. In total, I’ve taken 9 AP classes and then the rest are honors. I am an AP Scholar with Honors and a Kansas Honors Scholar. I am Persian and a first-generation college kid. Collegevine says I have an 80% of getting into any of these schools if that helps at all.

Both schools are going to be expensive. And reaches for both especially with a 1360 SAT.

Nothing wrong with KU. Do well there and the possibility of a funded grad school or law school is in your future.

UCLA has their own GPA calculation. Only 10-11th grades in the a-g course requirements. The capped weighted UC GPA weights only 8 semesters of AP/IB or DE courses taken 10-11th grades. The Uncapped UC GPA gives unlimited weighting to these courses for 10-11th grades.

So here is the calculator and you can figure out your UC GPA’s: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

Since your an Out of state applicant, just be aware that the UC’s give little to no financial aid so your will be paying around $65k/year to attend.

Below is some statistical data based on the UC capped weighted GPA and the 25th-75th percentiles for GPA and test scores.

UCLA should be considered a Reach school regardless and your SAT is on the low side.

2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCLA: 9%

2019 UC capped weighted GPA averages along with 25th-75th percentile range:
UCLA: 4.25 (4.18-4.32)

2019 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT totals:
UCLA: 1330-1550

Can you pay the full cost of attendance at NYU or UCLA? That’s a huge cost per year.

Exactly. NYU is well over 70,000 a year and UC for OOS is 65,000.

Nothing wrong with a quality Midwestern public school.
