can i get into nyu as a freshman in fall 2012????

i’m a junior in high school now at harvard-westlake in los angeles, ca. so it has a good reputation. i just dont have the best scores or gpa (lol?).
my gpa right now is about a 3.5 and my sat scores from march are an 1800. im gunna take the sat again in october… but im hoping that if my scores dont get better that going to harvard westlake is a little bit of an advantage. what do you think??

It’s not that much of an advantage, considering your SAT score. If you had a 2200+, then it might be an advantage. Currently, you just come off as an average student at a maybe slightly than better high school.

HWestlake is a pretty good school… 3.5 is average… 1800 is below average for NYU… depends on your major. Take the SATs again if you hit 1950+ you’ll have a decent chance at getting many non-portfolio non-competitive majors. Stern will not like the GPA so you’ll have to offset it with much higher SATs to have a decent shot. Tisch will let you in with your grades now if your portfolio is good enough, but Stern and Tisch are both super competitive. The other schools are of course technically competitive but less so and you might find a major you can apply for just to get you into the school and then double major or transfer within NYU.

Harvard-Westlake has a pretty good reputation, so your lucky. I don’t think a 3.5 GPA is really that bad considering the school, so NYU would give you a bit of leniency on that front. However, the big killer here is your scores. If you can get them up to around a 1950-2000 or above you’ll have a decent chance. It really depends on what you want to major in and whether you are applying ED. If you are applying to Stern, it will definitely be a big time reach, but some other schools within NYU are easier to get into. It’s best not to just rely on the reputation of your school though because that could backfire on you, especially if you just take easier classes.

Where is the 3.5 GPA coming from? They will look at what kinds of classes you’re taking. Someone could have a 4.0 GPA with 1-2 AP courses and someone else could have a 3.5 GPA with 9 AP courses. The 3.5 GPA looks a lot better to me. What school are you trying to get into? Stern? CAS? Tisch?

The answer for this on a test would be:

E. Not enough information

I have the same question too. I’m a junior right now and would be applying for fall 2012 for Steinhardt (music business). I have a 3.4 gpa, I’ve been in all honors classes since 9th grade (except for english and latin) and although AP’s only start to get offered in 11th grade I didn’t get into any but i’ll be in 3 AP’s next year. I took the AP US history exam last year and got a 4 though. My SAT scores are absolutely abysmal. I go to a good all girls private school in Philadelphia and I’ve been going there my whole life. I’m an African American female.

I only have two years of language on my transcript (latin…and i got C’s in that class) but I’ve been taking Japanese outside of school and have taken proficiency and kanji exams and will be taking the Japanese SAT II in the fall. I’ve also taught Japanese to kids at my school. I go to a Japanese language school on the weekends, i’ve been going for two years. I’ve been in a band for 4 years and i’ve composed music for my school orchestra and for video students. I’m a video student myself and I make a lot of music videos mostly… I’ve studied piano for 7 years and learned to play guitar on my own. I started guitar…a little over 4 years ago. I’m on tech crew and set design for school plays…i’ve been doing that all through high school as well. i play sports all three seasons for my school as well as during the summer while still going to music or japanese related summer programs. In college i’d like to play club lacrosse…or varsity lacrosse if that helps me get in lolz.

the thing i’m worried about the most are my SAT scores and GPA…and when i say they’re bad, i mean REALLY BAD. i’m retaking them in May though so… everyone is telling me that NYU is like…impossible to get into though…

Hi, I’m also panicking. Nyu has been my dream school since 5th grade… I’m a junior now with a 93 out of 100 GPA. I am in all honors and AP classes and get mostly As with the occasional B+. I have a lot of extracurriculars and leadership positions. I also plan to swim varsity at NYU so that may help? Let me know what you all think!

Yes, i have a similar question! I have a 4.0 UW GPA, and am in the IB full diploma program. I got a 23 ACT, and am wondering if i even stand a chance of getting into NYU?
