Can I get into Ohio State with no honors classes?

I really don’t want to go to a bad college. Ohio state has one of the largest student bodies of just about any college and a lot of people have recommended for me because they accept people with 3.0’s and decent SAT scores. I basically failed freshman year and had no honors classes last year, 1 college prep class. This year I am in all college prep and will probably be going into honors for the next half of the year. NEXT YEAR I will have at least two AP’s and all honors classes.

I am VERY worried though. I am really smart and I wanted to get into like NYU and Columbia but I can’t Penn State is kind of a reach for me even. It has basically come down to Ohio State now. I really love this school. So far all I have is 79 hours of community service at a hospital. I have a math tutor for Algebra II CP (I should be in honors b.c I took CP Geometry last year and got a 95/100 for my final grade! and I should be in Honors Spanish II!).

The thing is, my parents want to make sure I get straight A’s and do well on my ACT and SAT I. I am signed up for the PSAT next month but don’t know how I’ll do. I’ll ace what I know but b.c I’m just starting to learn Alg. II I might not know some stuff.

The bottom line is, do you think I have a chance? If I score around a 1,400 and make sure I have over 100 hours of service and make sure I have around a 3.0 do you think I will get it? My friends mom said I could. I’m not burning out or anything I can handle all my classes its just I’m so worried b.c I don’t want to get rejected.

I have thought about shadowing a bunch of doctors and asking each of them for LOR’s.

I also plan on volunteering at my local church.

I am not involved in sports or clubs and would rather not be.

Is there anything I can do. Please, I am so upset about this and my parents aren’t helping me.

bumping thread

“I am VERY worried though. I am really smart and I wanted to get into like NYU and Columbia but I can’t Penn State is kind of a reach for me even.”

and humble…“even”…

Anyway, Penn State University Park and Ohio State at Columbus are going to both be very high reaches to doubtful for you. The larger schools do not care as much about your ECs, so the volunteer, sports, leadership, etc…doesn’t tend to be taken into account until you pass the numbers requirements. Penn State UP’s average gpa 25-75% range is an unweighted 3.5-3.9. I assume ohio state’s is either similar , or maybe just a little lower. You may want to work on the sat score, as it may take a better than average score to offset a low gpa. Anyway, best of luck.

Thank you. At least your honest. At least I have Rutgers which is a good school.

I don’t think Ohio State very often accepts people with 3.0’s unless they are recruited athletes or have some other unusual hook.

Alright, forget it then.

a 3.0 is an 85. Whats your gpa from a 1-100 scale? I’ll post the standard scale for your

4.0 95-100
3.9 94
3.8 93
3.7 92
3.6 91
3.5 90
3.4 89
3.3 88
3.2 87
3.1 86
3.0 85

BTW apply anyway because you never know for sure.

Still apply, you never know.

Definitely score well on your ACT/SATs and get the right GPA because there are minimum requirements for Honors Program for OSU. So try to get the best grades and keep trying for ACTs/SATs even if you don’t get it first time.
I checked, you need:
30+ ACT or 1430+ SAT (Math + CR)
Top 10%.

Also, OSU also has a Scholar’s Program as well so check that out.

Also, I believe you can also get into Honors if you don’t get in your first quarters but I don’t know how that works yet, definitely contact OSU admissions for that.
