Hi, I’m 17, a senior at a high school in Columbus, and I applied to OSU main campus. I am Somali, a first generation female, and the first in my family to go to college. I have a 3.2 unweighted gpa, a 28 ACT, and many extra curriculars. I wrote my essay on my trip to Kenya this summer where I volunteered for the Somali refugees along the Kenyan/Somalia border and I think it was a moving essay that showcased how passionate I am about community service. I’m really smart, I just didn’t work as hard as I could have early on in high school and I’m so scared I won’t get into OSU. What do you think, do I have a chance? Thanks. I was already admitted to OU and Miami, but OSU is my first choice.

I think you have a good chance of getting accepted because of your URM status. If you were not URM and first generation, I would say you would very likely be rejected because of your GPA/test score combination. Did you answer the essay prompt that they gave you? It seems that what you said above would not be an appropriate topic for the prompt given. I’m confused on that.

Oh yeah, I answered the one where it asked what would your family/friends be suprised about you throughout the next 4 years or something like that, I mentioned my trip while telling how I plan on hopefully being able to obtain an internship working amongst physicians who live in Kenya during summer breaks, and continue to help the refugees. I said that would suprise my family just because I’m very close to them and get homesick easily and whatnot.

Also, when I say I want to get into OSU, I mean main campus. I would honestly feel like a failure if I was deferred to the branch campuses.

I was accepted today: 29 ACT, 3.89 unweighted, white female
I think your personal experiences and minority status will give you a definite edge, white people at my school have gotten in with 3.2 GPA and lower ACT scores so I would stop fretting!
I agree w/ you on the branch campuses thing as well, but I honestly don’t think you have anything to stress about
