I have all A’s except for a B in PE because of a harpy gym teacher and another in AP Chemistry. The only AP exam I know is a 5 on my AP World exam from sophomore year. SAT’s are a 630 on writing 710 on reading and 740 on math. A 750 on SAT II for chemistry and a 660 on SAT II for Math II. I’ll probably apply to the school of natural sciences. I’ve got all the extracurricular stuff down (two seasons of sports, captained one, president and secretary of two separate clubs, worked in a lab at UNC for a summer). My parents couldn’t pay full tuition without being crazy in debt after four years. I know that with the acceptance letter they also inform of scholarships, could I get any?

I’ve become really nervous ever since I started filling out the Common Application.

It’s really impossible for anyone here to tell you if you can get a top merit scholarship from a school as there are so many factors that go into college scholarship selection and none of us are privy to scholarship committees. But I can tell you that in general, to be a competitive candidate for such a scholarship, you should be in the top 5% of the applicant pool.

Since Rice’s 25:75 range for the SAT is 1960:2280 and your SAT is 2080, I would be concerned that you might not be in contention for merit aid. The SAT is just one factor that will be considered, but it is an important one. Others will include your gpa and the rigor of your coursework given what is offered at your HS.

While I wouldn’t say NOT to apply to Rice and hope for merit aid, I would definitely have a solid list of schools that include admissions and financial safeties. For more information, be sure to look at the FA and Scholarship forum.
