Can I get into this school?

I’m currently a sophomore in high school, and I feel as if my future isn’t very bright. I think my schedules aren’t very good. I wanted to major in something along the lines of Computer Science or Software Engineering, but I’m not really sure what exactly I want to major in. Because I live in Maryland, I want to go to the University of Maryland: College Park, and I’ve heard that its Department of Computer Science is actually really good. I’m not too sure if that’s actually true or not.

Also University of Maryland: Baltimore County.

If my schedules are good enough, and my SATs, PSATs, extracurricular activities, and GPAs are good enough, then what other colleges should I consider. (I realize this question is pretty broad and “up there” in terms of being academically and extracurriculary active.)

In 9th grade I took many classes that are required to graduate high school. I did this because I just wanted to get them out of the way, allowing me to take classes that I actually think I would need.

9th Grade:
Lifetime Fitness (P.E.) 1st Semester/ Health 2nd Semester
Algebra 1 Data Analysis
US History Honors
Earth and Space Science G/T
English 9 G/T
Art I: Foundations of Studio Art
Computer Science I-Honors

I’m actually good at math, but I was put in regular on grade level math. The science that I took is also on grade level. I feel like these two classes make it seem like I’m not that smart at all.

9th Grade Grades (# = Quarter): 1st | 2nd | Midterm | 3rd | 4th | Finals | Final Grade |
PE/Health A | A | A | A | A | A | A |
Math A | A | A | A | A | A | A |
Social Studies A | A | A | A | A | A | A |
Science A | A | A | A | A | A | A |
English B | A | B | A | A | B | A |
Art A | A | A | A | A | A | A |
Comp. Sci. A | A | A | A | A | A | A |

Cumulative Unweighted GPA: 4.0

Extracurricular Activities:
Wrestling

10th Grade (Current Year):
Spanish 1
American Government Honors
Computer Science 2 G/T
Biology G/T
Algebra II G/T
English 10 G/T
Geometry

I decided that I should take two math classes this year because I really wanted to get ahead. There is a Spanish 1 Honors, and it’s in the exact same period with the same teacher as I have right now. I’m currently trying to get my counselor to change it to honors, which will allow me to get the honors credit. They are the exact same class, except one has the word “honors” in it, and the other doesn’t.

10th Grade Grades (# = Quarter): 1st | 2nd | Midterm | 3rd | 4th | Finals | Final Grade |
Spanish A | A | B | A | ? | ? | ? |
Am. Gov. A | A | B | A | ? | ? | ? |
Comp. Sci. 2 A | A | A | A | ? | ? | ? |
Science A | A | A | A | ? | ? | ? |
Geometry A | A | B | A | ? | ? | ? |
English B | B | B | A | ? | ? | ? |
Alg. 2 A | A | A | A | ? | ? | ? |

I can guarantee that I will get all A’s most of my classes for the 4th quarter grade, my finals, and my final grade. The only classes that I need to worry about are American Government Honors for the finals and English 10 G/T for the 4th quarter grade, finals, and final grade.

Extracurricular Activities:

Other:

I have not taken the SAT yet, but here is something.
I also don’t know when to take SAT subject tests.

My PSATs for 9th grade were horrible, but I don’t recall what I got. On my PSATs for 10th grade, or my current year, I also did horrible. I received a score of 147, and this predicted that I would get a 1345 to around a 1405 on my SATs. I took an actual SAT practice test after a month or so, and I received a 1720, which was higher than the PSATs’ prediction. Although it was much higher, I realize that this still isn’t very good. After taking the practice test, I bought a Collegeboard Official Guide to the SAT book or whatever it’s called. I’ve been using it for months, and all I need to do now is actually take all of the practice tests in the back of the book. I will be taking the SATs next year, or my junior year. I also plan to study throughout all of my summer break.

Along with studying for the SATs in my junior year over summer break, I also plan to take this program called STARTALK. It’s a program for learning a variety of languages, and I chose to do Chinese. I thought this would be a good idea because it would allow ow me to get a third language credit for school, and I wanted to do it for a personal gain since I am actually half White and half Chinese.

I wanted to take Pre-Calculus G/T over the summer, but it costs $525. My mom won’t let me because the cost is too high, and she would have to miss a lot of work. I can see why this would be a hassle for her. I mainly wanted to do this because I wanted to move up to AP Calculus AB, and this would also allow me to change my Physics G/T to AP Physics. This would also allow me to take AP Calculus BC in my senior year!

I also wanted to take a Networking Security Academy, along with my current Computer Programming Academy that I am taking, but Spanish and a crowded schedule got in the way of it. The academy would have let me receive a CISCO certification of some sort.

Sorry if the formatting of this post was really bad. I hope that this whole post wasn’t too long for any of you to read.

Best to retake the SAT/ACT junior year; it usually yields better results than practice tests taken in sophomore year. This assumes you score 1720 for real.

UMD: Match
UMBC: Low match/Match

you’re perfect, aim for 1700+ on the SAT. Maryland isn’t as good of a school as Penn State University Park in my opinion, but you may decide for yourself. Also, don’t minimize your scores, aim for better schools if you can afford.

The guy is in-state for UMD… the educational difference between Penn State and UMD isn’t worth the cost difference.

When you said that UMBC was a low match, did you mean based off of what I wanted to do or what my academics and extracurricular activities show.

I also saw that UMBC had more people in Computer and Information Sciences than CP. Do you know why this is?
