Can I get into U.F.?

Hi. I am a student at Christopher Columbus Catholic High School in Miami, Florida and I was wondering if anyone can give me some useful advice as far as getting into U.F. and the admissions process? I have 4.0 GPA and a 3.5 GPA unweighted. The total number of academic courses I have and will take are 35. I am being considered for nomination for the Silver Knight Award for journalism. I am the president and founder of the Stock Market Club which goes to Florida International University’s College of Business to learn more about the global market. I am the president of the League Against Cancer which helps spread cancer awareness and raise funds for needy patients. I am a writer for the school’s newspaper. I am ranked in the top 17% of my class out of 363 students. I have 2 jobs and I work everyday after school. I am a member of Rho Kappa, which is the History Honor Society. Next year, I will be a member of the National Honor Society. I am going to attend U.F.'s Summer Journalism Institute at the College of Journalism and Communications. My first SAT score was a 1720; 570 Math, 540 Critical Reading, 610 Writing. I am currently working with my school and Apple Inc. on bringing iPad’s to the classroom to serve as books, laptops, notebooks, etc. If anyone has any useful advice or tips for me I would greatly appreciate it. Also when I go visit U.F. is there anything in particular I should make sure to do? Thanks.

I’ll bake myself a pie and eat it if you don’t get into UF.

Your application seems pretty solid, but it might be helpful to pull up your SAT score a bit, if possible.

Hi there Explorer.

I graduated from Columbus last year ('09).

Let me just tell you one thing: do not worry, just apply.

One thing I noticed about UF compared to other Universities is that it looks at applicants as a whole, instead of one-sided (mainly numbers: GPA, SAT, etc.)

some things I would recommend for you however:

Retake the SAT. There is one coming up June 5th. If you have not applied, paying the late fee may be worth it.

Take it again early in the fall (whether you take it in June or not).

If UF is one of your higher choices, start working on the application essay as soon as possible. Have two teachers look at it, one for content review and the other for grammatical review. For grammatical review I would suggest asking Panzer. It is up to you who you want to take it for content review.

Turn in your application early, but make sure you feel comfortable with it (mainly the essay).

Best of luck,

I agree with what pretty much everyone else said. But, you might want to reevaluate your thoughts on having the iPad replace anything.

I think the SAT scores are low for Florida. I know quite a few kids with higher scores that got denied. Your ECs are more impressive then a lot of kids, so that may offset the SAT score, but if you want to be confident of getting in I would really try to pull up the SAT score.

^^ I agree. try to get at least a 600 on the SAT reading and math if you can…and improve your writing as much as possible. Also, consider taking the ACT? some people find one to be easier than the other.

SAT is the only thing you really have to worry about. your rank could be an issue, but you go to a private school, and that could change things.

I’m from Fort Myers, Fl and I’ve always wanted to be a Gator.
I have a job, I’m the President on Interact Club in my school, was the only person from my school elected to go to a leadership seminar with Rotary Club.

I have a 4.5 weighted GPA and a 3.6 unweighted. I currently have a 1650 on my SATs but am waiting on my new scores to come out. I’m in the top 9% in my class of 450 seniors.

I have been dual enrolled at my local community college for two years, and I’ve always taken all AP and honors courses.

I wrote a very strong essay and applied only a couple weeks after the application was available.
