Financial Aid wasn’t enough for my out-of-state tuition. So I was on a payment plan and was behind but they let me continue as long as I kept making monthly payments. Going into the next year, I was trying to get in-state tuition and for a reason no one understands, they wouldn’t give it to me. I couldn’t take the increased payments and had to put school on the back burner. I went to a community college for some basics but I cant really do anything anywhere because I owe money so I can’t get my transcript. I don’t have the money to pay this off on my own, they’ve started just taking my state income taxes because of it. Can I use this debt owed to the school and try to have it consolidated so that it’s paid off to the school and I make monthly payments?
Did you ask the school?
You owe your school money. You need to talk to YOUR school about that.
Expecting instate tuition was likely a mistake. But you know that now.
So…go to the first school. Find out what you need to do to clear up your debt to them.
How much do you owe them?
In the beginning they would just tell me it’s in collections. At the time, even when they collection company would send me the balance, I would just look at it lol. I had given up, and the other day my coworkers asked debt consolidation and I realized, I never thought of it. I thought to ask before I get hype, looking for a company.
Its just under 7k. The only thing they’ve said to me is that it has to be paid in full as far as they’re concerned. I don’t remember who the collection company is. They’ve started taking the money out my state taxes, could I ask the IRS, who the company is?
Any chance you can earn that amount of money between now and the end of the summer…take a second job…put ALL of the earnings towards the loan debt. All of it.
Can you clarify- you owe two different colleges a total of 7k, or you owe ONE college the 7K? How did you pay for community college?
You need to sit down with an actual human being ASAP. You need to bring your paystubs, last year’s tax return, and whatever academic records you have.
Lay it on the line- you want to finish your Bachelor’s degree. You make X, you owe them what you owe them. Can they work with you on a payment plan so you can go back to college.
Are you living out of state (i.e. not where your family lives?)
I owe one school, 7k, I started there in 2009 and in 2012 they still wanted me to pay out of state tuition, so that was the end of that bc I was already paying the extra out of pocket and couldn’t afford it anymore. When I went to the community college, I got in-state tuition with no problems, so financial aid covered everything and I wasn’t paying out of pocket.
My family is in NY, I’ve been here in NC since 2009, At the time, only my sister lived here. I literally moved down here with her overnight when she came home from visiting. Sh was headed back to NC and I asked if I could go with her…
Sitting with someone is the actually problem, who am I seeking this help from? I don’t have good credit so my bank has denied me of loans in the past, not for something like this but more so to refinance my car…Do I try a different bank? Are there companies for this type of issue?
I’m not in a situation where I could do that or beter yet, where I honestly see that workng. I work a decent job and dont mind a second job but my earnings get me check to check. Another job could make me probably enough for the monthly payments I’d like to have.
What do you mean, “they’ve started just taking my state income taxes”? Do you mean that a state tax refund has been garnished? Or that money is being withheld from your pay each pay period to go toward the debt, similar to income tax withholding?
State refund is being garnished. I haven’t received my state refund for maybe 2-3 years.
Your sister is not your parent. Your state of residency is NY…and you knew that when you enrolled in a NC school.
Community colleges often have a different criteria for awarding instate status than four year public universities.
At this point the OP has lived in NC for 8 years, and it sounds like out of school for a few years working in NC. Moving forward would the OP qualify as a NC resident for tuition purposes?
Retroactively, the OP owes what is owed, just wondering if there is a possibility moving forward one the debt to the original college is paid?
How old was the OP when he moved to NC? He has been there for 6 or 7 years.
Um I know my SISTER isn’t my parent, so YES I knew I’d be paying out-of-state but NOT after clearly being a resident here for over 2 years, at the time, working a steady job.
I am a resident. Someone asked me could the money owed be looked at as debt, therefore have the debt consolidated and I get on a monthly payment. While making those payments, I don’t have to worry about being in debt with the school and can return.
Is that possible???
Are you asking if you can get a loan for all of your debt? Go to a bank and ask them.
I understand you live in NC. But you started a four year college there as an OOS student…and your parents do NOT live in NC. As an undergrad, where did you read that you would be entitled to instate tuition at any point?
If your state tax refund is being garnished, there’s a chance that the debt has been reduced to a judgment already. If so, that would make it harder to incorporate the debt into any kind of consolidation program.
You said in an earlier post that you have poor credit. Getting a debt consolidation loan sounds like it may be problematic.
You cannot consolidate a non-federal student loan with a federal student loan. It sounds like you just owed your school $XX per month (which became $7000) and it was not a student loan program. You also cannot get a student loan currently to pay a past student debt, but you might be able to get a consumer loan to pay off the school debt, and then pay that consumer loan now. It’s not easy to get a consumer loan for $7000, but you can try.
You need to find out what form that $7000 is in now. Is it just a bill you owe your former school? Did the school sue you and now it is a judgment? It sounds like it is a debt owed the school (state) and that’s why they can garnish your state income tax over-payment as it is a state account. The way around that is to underwithhold on your state taxes; figure out how much your state taxes will be and only have that amount withheld. Of course, your debt will not go down.
You can ask the school for a payment plan, but if they have already reduced it to a judgment, it is likely it has been sold to a collection company. See who is taking the garnishment from your taxes. Private collectors can’t do that without filing a writ of garnishment (and if they do that, they’d likely also garnish your ban account and maybe even federal tax return), but a state debt gets special privileges.
