I’m planning on getting a Masters of Teaching concentrating on TESOL. I’m not sure if majoring or minoring in a foreign language is an option as a graduate student, but I wanted to study Korean and possibly Mandarin. My undergrad school didn’t offer Korean, and the school I plan on attending has really good programs in both those languages. My major as an undergrad was International Studies.
You don’t really major or minor in anything when you’re an master’s student - you just study in your field because graduate degrees are more specialized like that. You can have a cognate area in a PhD program, but it’s still not like majoring or minoring in a subject like in undergrad. Many graduate programs have some kind of foreign language requirement (proficiency demonstrated either by taking a test, completing a significant amount of undergraduate coursework in the area, or taking classes at the university), but you most certainly can’t take enough classes to fulfill a foreign language major (usually around 40 credits) in addition to completing your own coursework (at some programs, something like 30 credit hours).
Why don’t you just go back to school and take foreign language classes if you want to do that? Either before or after you plan to get the MAT?
