Can I go to a good Engineering College?

I recently finished my freshman year of high school, and did not do as good as I hoped. My weighted gpa is a 2.86, while my unweighted gpa is a 2.66. I would like to get near straight A’s in my sophomore and junior year in order to make up for this. Can I still go to a good Engineering college? I would like to go to Rutgers or Virginia Tech. Thanks!

What is your home state? What can your family afford? If you get a 4.0 the next two years you will have some good options.

My home state is New Jersey. Since Rutgers is located here my parents will be able to pay my tuition with no problems (my brother is also a student at Rutgers Engineering). However, I pay be able to get some financial aid for Virginia Tech as I am on the varsity golf team and jv football. I am working very hard over the summer to prepare for math and chemistry as they are the hardest courses in my school, and I hope to get above a 3.0 gpa by the end of sophomore year. Thank you so much though!

You have 2.5 more years of grades that colleges will look at - freshman grades are the least important to every college. Focus on how to get those straight A’s in high school - there’s plenty of solid colleges in the US that will accept you with a better GPA come application time, but start with improving your GPA - the options will be there.

How does FA relate to sport involvement exactly here?

Unless you are spectacular during your junior and senior years and the VT coaches RECRUIT you because you’re so awesome, you will not get an athletic scholarship.

No more slacking off in sophomore and junior years and you can still attend a top engineering school! And don’t forget - it’s not about which school you attend. It’s about what you learn IN the school. Good luck!

Thank you all so much for your advice! I will do my best to get a 4.0 gpa in my sophomore and junior year :-*
