The reason my GPA is so low is bc Freshman/Sophomore year. I swung it up to a 4.0 second semester junior year though.

I have a lot of awards in forensics and I’m really into public speaking and debating. The awards are at National level tournaments, not just locals.

It’s highly unlikely you would get accepted with such a low GPA. Perhaps if you are a recruitable athlete. What’s your class rank? For Brown, only 3% of accepted students fall below the top 10% (and Yale is even tougher). You can bet that the ones that do make it in are generally very close to that 10% line AND have significant national-level ECs or are the children of big donors or famous people.

URM status help at all?

If it weren’t for the SAT, I would say no, but you should apply. They might take you.

Yes, it will help – but don’t underestimate the strength of the nation’s very best URMs, either. The competition is brutal at all schools with acceptance rates below 15%.

Your SAT is very strong, and national level awards will also help a lot. A compelling essay which in part explains why you got off to a bad start, what problems you overcame, and what you have since learned from it could address the adcom’s fears that you have a “slacker” personality. At Brown especially, with its open curriculum, you need to be able to show that you are self-directed and won’t flounder in an environment where you are given an exceptional amount of freedom.

You should definitely apply, but also apply to a laddered group of selective schools with acceptance rates up to maybe 35% PLUS a safety or two where you would actually be happy to attend.
