So, I’m 21. I was just accepted as a transfer, and will hopefully live on campus for my first year. My question: what is their outlook on responsible drinking in the dorms? I don’t want to get drunk, but every now and then I want a beer. Do they have a “dry campus” policy? Also, I’m sure that it’s against the rules to drink in your room if your roommate is underage. Do they try to group you with people of the same age? How anal are they about enforcing this stuff?
Again, I am not talking about getting blackout drunk. I’m just talking about mature, responsible, mild drinking-- nothing beats an ice-cold Sierra Nevada after finally getting a stressful project turned in. What should I be prepared for?

roflmao at this thread. check this out: (from the ORL)

A. General Conduct Regulations

A.1 Alcohol

a. Possession of visible containers, opened or closed, (e.g. cups, cans, bottles, cases/boxes, on which alcoholic beverage insignia appear) anywhere within or on grounds immediately adjacent to the On-Campus Housing facilities except in an assigned student room when the door is closed and the alcoholic beverage cannot be detected from outside the room/suite, is prohibited. If alcohol possession or consumption can be detected from outside the room/suite, it is considered public, visible and in violation of this policy.

b. Possession of bulk alcoholic beverages, that is, amounts for storage or use that is excessive under the circumstances for personal use is prohibited. Devices used or intended for the rapid consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Kegs, cases of beer, and other beverages with an equivalent amount of alcoholic content in any form of container are considered bulk alcohol.

f. If alcohol is present, the hosting of a room/suite gathering (e.g. party, celebration) where there are more than two (2) guests for each resident of that room who is present is prohibited. Hosting of multiple room gatherings, that is, an activity taking place primarily for the consumption of alcoholic beverages where people move from one room to another is prohibited. This regulation applies even if all rooms involved are within allowable guest limits.

Sweet, We can drink alone!

I get the sense that as long as you’re not bothering anyone, you’re fine. All of those rules are there to keep students from doing any excessively cacophonous partying. Seems like if you shut your door and aren’t an a-hole you would probably be fine.

I have heard of schools with “dry campus” policies that have alcohol-sniffing dogs come into the dorms. If it’s not a total dry campus, then you’re surely safe as long as you are respectful and responsible.

Probably also depends upon whether or not your RA hates you or is on a power trip.

RAs are usually very chill, they’re super busy and usually upper classmen. They will let you know when they do room checks, which is where you hide everything you’re not supposed to have. For example, I have a hot plate which isn’t allowed, but I just hide it when they do room checks and we’re good. (:

Beers in college dorms?! Perish the thought!
