Can I have a car my first year at OSU as an honors student? What are the other perks of being an honors student. And what is the profile of a strong future-honors student at OSU? Thanks!

hahaha no honors perks do not include freshman parking! Main perk is scheduling before all other non-honors students…not for your first quarter, though.

what is a good profile to have to get it?

the website says:

minimum 30 act

top10% of class

but those are just guidelines, im sure there are some above and below those marks.

I think they are just that, guidelines. I think the program uses one or the other as a benchmark to evaluate. My dd had the test scores but no class rank (school did not provide but she was def not top 10% at her competitive school). She was a NMSF and had good grades. Invited, accepted, won full tuition scholarship through Maximus competition. She’s mainted a high GPA, achieving Dean’s list (means all As at Ohio State, even A- counts!) 2/3 quarters her frosh year. She takes 1-2 Honors classes each quarter. You can apply to honors if not originally offered and can also be admitted after you attend. dd’s roomie appealed decision, got in…then was cut after not meeting GPA standards after her freshman year, so they must know what they’re looking for!

thank you!

Can I have a car as an Honors freshman: Yes and No
Parking privileges are unrelated to Honors status; they are determined by your academic standing, which is determined by you number of credit hours.

Freshmen (0-45 CR) can only buy West Campus Parking if they are commuter students (live off-campus, which for freshmen usually means with parents in town). West campus parking is cheap $80 per year, but it’s across the river and it takes 15-10min by bus to get to Campus.

Sophomores (45-90 CR) become eligible for C student parking. This is surface lot parking by Ohio Stadium and St John’s arena, and to the South of campus. Its more expensive ($400-some) but more convenient. A lot of Honors freshmen have enough AP credit to qualify for this.

Juniors and Seniors (90+) can apply for a student parking garage lottery (actually, there are three lotteries that get you into different garages). This is expensive ($650), but is really nice.

Grad students and TAs can get employee B parking, and A parking is faculty-only.

There are tfour main perks associated with Honors status

Honors Classes: this is a big perk for intro/freshman level courses. Most regular courses are huge and taught by sometimes-disinterested PhD students. In my personal experience, Math 161H, Econ 200H, and Psy 100H have small classes and are taught by real professors–much better than regular

Scheduling: Honors kids schedule early. this is a worthwhile perk because some classes fill up fast. It also takes away much of the pain of scheduling.

Advising: honors students get two academic advisers (Honors adviser and Major adviser), and the Honors advisers care more and are more competent than regular ones. That being said, you probably shouldn’t go to OSU if you are a student in need of counseling/academic guidance (not saying this is a bad thing). They are not really a find-yourself kind of place, more of a school for people who already know their major.

Housing. Contrary to promo material, underclassman honors housing is not better than regular housing in terms of building quality/amenities. Most honors students find themselves either in the big towers or in the apartment blocks. The advantage is that Honors students are housed with other honors students, usually on Honors floors.

I don’t think any freshman can get a parking pass. This is from the parking page
Please note: The number of credit hours accumulated does not change the permit eligibility status of First Year Students living in the residence halls. (For example, a First Year Student living in the residence halls who has 50 credit hours still cannot purchase a parking permit.
