I chose ‘Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transistion from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community or family.’ as my essay topic and I want to add some technical details to it because I want to answer about a project that I feel as the best fit for this topic. Is it ok to add some technical terms?

Absolutely, jargon can be a very effective way to convey your knowledge of the field and enthusiasm, as well as immersing the reader into your passions/hobbies/talents. But as with everything in writing, you have to use it effectively; don’t get too technical and don’t overwhelm the reader, who probably doesn’t have extensive knowledge in your technical subject matter. If used sparingly and cautiously, it can really add a lot to your essay.

No. try to keep it to a bare minimum. Like i sentence max. If you get a reader who doesn’t know what you are talking about then they will have a ver difficult time reading your essay. Ideally the essay should captivate the attention of the widest group of people possible.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Your essay should be tailored to your audience. Technical jargon for a technical audience. Straightforward terms for a general audience. Not tailoring your choice of words shows tone-deafness and social/cultural/leadership ineptitude.

The words & phrases u choose should support a point u are trying to make and not just try to “impress” your audience by arrogantly talking over their heads. This is the difference between being an EFFECTIVE and ENGAGING writer/speaker who successfully conveys a message (that’s the point), and an egghead that people tune out.

@YuiHirasawa thanks for helping me!

@bomerr and @GMTplus7 …Ok! got your point. I won’t be putting a lot of technical information but just enough so that I can convey my message without making them feel bored! Thanks guys for helping me!

When I wrote my essay I had to get a little technical because of the subject (being a mechanic) but i tried making it as easy as possible to read and kept the technical words to a very minimum level.

Words I used: stoichiometry, hydraulics, electromagnetism, wrench, multimeter, spark plug, lug nut

Furthermore this was the intellectual development essay so it wasn’t TOO out of place.
AND even if someone doesn’t know these words (even tho 4/7 are from a traditional high school chemistry or physics course), the essay still makes sense because I tied them into more generic concepts. (e.g learning)

@bomerr same here… I am also writing about machines.
