If the tool ( bigfuture, etc.) gives me 5 100% match schools, do I add those to my list? They matched all the criteria I pu t in so why not?
There’s a lot to be said for the vibe of a campus and what a student body is like, and the match tool isn’t a good indicator of that. It’s no replacement for an actual visit.
Search tools are a good way to narrow down schools based on desired major and affordability. You should probably take a closer look at them - get the Fiske Guide to Colleges (either buy or from your local library) and review the schools there. Look for alumni groups in your area, or get in touch with the admissions office to see if they can put you in touch with current students. If there’s a forum for the school on CC, read through recent threads. All of these things can help you figure out if the schools will be a fit based on intangible factors. If it’s possible, try and visit when classes are in session; that will give you the best feel of all.
